Ok writers, authors, editors -- here's your word for the day: straits, straights. There is a difference. Strait: 1. a narrow passage of water connecting two seas or two other large areas of water. "The Strait of Gibraltar." 2. used in reference to a situation characterized by a specified degree of trouble or difficulty. "The economy is in dire straits." Straight: noun 1. a part of something that is not curved or bent, especially a section of a racetrack. "He pulled away in the straight to win by half a second." If a hurricane hits an island, the people are not in bad straights. Just wanted you to know that. The more new writers I sample in various genres, the more irritated I get over poor word usage. PLEASE hire a good editor. Yes, you can tell a marvelous story, and that's what you are -- storytellers -- but PLEASE hire an editor to help you tell it right. We all enjoy reading good stories.

My editor's pet peeve is this: Don't use words because you think they sound good, but you don't really KNOW the word. And get a good editor! Example: In a 5-star reviewed book by a mystery writer who is selling well -- "viola" instead of the French "voila."Some readers won't know the difference. BUT I DO! And so will many other readers. OK. I'll go sit quietly now. I'm editing one of our authors truly well-written and researched books, and that's my focus for today!

We're thrilled this morning that "Life Stories: Educator, Painter, Pilot, Stained-Glass Artist" by Dr. Robert Canady has received all five-star Readers Favorite reviews! Congratulations to Dr. Canady, and to Dr. Shirley Raines, his lovely wife and president emeritus of University of Memphis, who has guided this project. Reviewer Mansoor Ahmed wrote: "Congratulations on your 5-star review!
"Life Stories" is an extraordinary memoir by Dr. Robert Canady, a teacher and artist who had the chance to experience life from various perspectives. His journey started during the Great Depression and includes his roles in Hollywood, the Air Force, and as an educator. The memoir consists of narratives where he changed his career to being a stained-glass artist, made masterpieces for churches, and provided vision to the Montessori education center. In addition to his career successes, the author writes about life with his wife, his family, and the power that has inspired most of his works. Life, work, faith, and art are intimately connected in Canady’s life as he says: ‘I am an artist, a creative soul, and a faithful believer in God.’.

I appreciate Dr. Robert Canady's writing for the skill and ease with which his thoughts are conveyed. While most storytellers control their readers through their work, this one inspires readers to delve into his life journey. Every part makes a significant contribution and enhances the overall narrative; the information flow is expertly managed and ideal for the majority of readers. The characters, especially Canady and his wife Shirley, are warmly presented and reflect the spirit of collaboration and a shared objective. The memoir is profoundly personal and inspirational due to its recurring themes of fortitude, inventiveness, and a commitment to community. "Life Stories" is a timeless reminder of the beauty found in a life well lived, making it an intriguing read for anybody interested in the nexus of art, spirituality, and lifelong learning."
"Life Stories" is available by messaging Dr. Raines and also for sale on online booksellers' sites.
