Did you know Lamont almost had a different face?

Before Sanford and Son became a classic, the role of Fred Sanford’s son wasn’t locked in. For a short time, the name in the mix was Richard Pryor.

Yeah. That Richard Pryor.

The early vision leaned sharper and louder. A father–son duo that pushed harder, talked faster, and cut deeper. Pryor fit that picture. He and Redd Foxx came from the same comedy roots. Raw. Street-smart. No filter.

But network TV hit the brakes.

Pryor’s comedy was seen as too real for prime time back then. Executives worried his edge wouldn’t land with a national audience. So the role went another way.

Enter Demond Wilson.

His Lamont brought something different. Calm. Grounded. The steady counter to Fred’s chaos. That balance is a big reason the show worked the way it did.

A Pryor version would’ve been wild. But the Lamont we got gave the show heart—and staying power.
Funny how a “what if” can still shape TV history.
