🎬NEW EPISODE ALERT: The Jersey Nerds are back with another movie double feature!

This week, we're pairing two very different New Jersey stories about young men trying to figure out who they want to be: The Karate Kid (1984) and Don Jon (2013).

The Karate Kid — Daniel LaRusso leaves New Jersey for California and quickly discovers that fitting into his new home won't be easy. We break down Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita's unforgettable chemistry, Daniel's rivalry with Johnny Lawrence, Mr. Miyagi's unconventional training methods, the All Valley Tournament, and why this underdog story became an enduring '80s classic.

Don Jon — Nearly 30 years later, Joseph Gordon-Levitt gives us a very different kind of Jersey protagonist. Jon seems to have everything figured out—his friends, family, relationships and routine—but his expectations about intimacy prevent him from building genuine connections. We discuss Gordon-Levitt's feature directorial debut, Scarlett Johansson and Julianne Moore's performances, and the film's exploration of fantasy versus reality.

🎙️ In this episode, we discuss:🗽 The Jersey Connection — Daniel LaRusso leaves Newark behind while Jon's identity is deeply rooted in North Jersey culture🧭 Growing Up — two protagonists forced to reconsider what they think they know about life and relationships🤝 Unexpected Mentors — Mr. Miyagi and Esther become unlikely influences who challenge Daniel and Jon to see the world differently❤️ Relationships & Expectations — how Ali and Barbara initially represent each character's idea of the "perfect" relationship—and what they learn when reality doesn't match expectations🥋 Wax On, Wax Off — the training, tournament and unforgettable moments that turned The Karate Kid into a pop-culture phenomenon.
Two Jersey guys. Two completely different journeys. One big lesson about growing up.
