The Price of Trust

I used to believe in "forever." Used to think that when she said she loved me, it meant something. For two years, I built my world around her laugh, her promises, her "good morning" texts that came like clockwork.

Then I found the messages on her phone. Not by snooping. She'd left it open, careless in her deception. Months of lies unraveled in minutes. All those nights she was "studying late" or "out with girlfriends." All those times I defended her when my friends raised eyebrows.

Now I see couples holding hands and wonder who's lying. I get close to someone new and my chest tightens with suspicion. Trust feels like a luxury I can't afford anymore.

Sometimes I wish I'd found out sooner. Maybe it would have hurt less. Maybe I wouldn't have wasted so many months planning a future that was already broken.

But here's what I'm learning: the pain doesn't make the love any less real. It doesn't erase the good moments or make me a fool for believing.

As my grandmother used to say, "Grief is the price we pay for love."

I'm still paying. But I'm learning it's a price worth paying, even when love doesn't last forever.
