NOVA l PBS

Tonight at 9/8c, NOVA l PBS will rebroadcast “Last B-24” which tells the story of recovering the remains of Lt. Eugene Ford from his B-24 "The Tulsamerican" in the waters near the Island of Viz in Croatia. It was a successful operation for the DPAA (Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency) and a team of dedicated civilian divers. 74 years after he was lost, his remains were returned to his daughter Norma and a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery laid him to rest. But the story was not complete.

Near Ford’s Tulsamerican was another aircraft from WW2, and it also has a crew member still on board: Lt. Ernest Vienneau from Millinocket, Maine was the only crew member to not escape the crash of his B-17 Bomber. The co-pilot was mortally wounded by anti-aircraft fire over the target and was unconscious when the B-17 ditched in the waters near Viz. The same divers who recovered Lt. Ford performed an exploratory dive on Vienneau’s B-17. A much deeper depth than the B-24 but in excellent condition, the aircraft needs permission from the Croatian government before Lt. Vienneau can be recovered and returned to his waiting family.

On April 23, 1945, the U.S. Navy warship USS Eagle 56 exploded off the coast of Portland, Maine due to a malfunction of the ship's boilers... or so the official report said. For decades, questions and confusion about the tragedy have plagued its survivors and their families. Some believe the sinking was actually the result of an attack by a rogue German U-boat. The truth of the sinking remained unknown until a team of civilian divers discovered the wreck and through an underwater forensic investigation, confirmed the suspicion of the German U-boat attack.

On Friday, May 22 a monument was dedicated to the sailors of the USS Eagle 56 (PE-56) at Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, ME. These photos were taken by executive producer Kirk Wolfinger. The 3-part documentary series "The Hunt for Eagle 56" was produced for the Smithsonian Channel in 2019.

Sunday night! The final episode of THE HUNT FOR EAGLE 56 airs on Smithsonian Channel at 9pm.

After four years and countless dead ends, a team of civilian investigators has found pieces of the sunken Eagle 56, the Holy Grail of New England shipwrecks. They want to reveal their discoveries to both the Navy and the families of the warship's crew, but their case is not yet complete. They still need the last and most important piece of the wreckage: the ship's boilers. With winter quickly approaching, time is running out to find the final clue, solve the 75-year-old case, and honor the sailors who died in the disaster.

Great story and a nice ego boost to see myself on screen throughout the episode. Happy to assist with any future projects if you're filming in the Richmond area. Kindest regards, Gus.

Hi Richie, I was watching one of your shows today and it made me remember a teacher I had back in the 60’s named “Mrs. Kohler”, she use to go diving off of Laguna Beach, CA and Catalina Island a lot back then. Sadly she had an accident while diving in Laguna and passed on way back then. I was just wondering if she might be any relation to you? She was a teacher at Prospect Elementery School in Orange, California
#SaveMercyStreet it is such a shame to cancel such a quality show after only two seasons. It is such an important part of American History and a story that needs to be told.
