| The United Nations General Assembly has voted 164–1 to adopt the "Correct the Map" resolution, sponsored by African Union member states (led by Togo) and co-sponsored by France.

The non-binding resolution urges schools, newsrooms, and tech companies to adopt the Equal Earth map projection over the traditional Mercator projection.

Developed in 1569 for ocean navigation, the Mercator map distorts landmasses near the poles, visually shrinking Africa to roughly the size of Greenland, even though Africa is actually 14 times larger.

According to news outlers, Togo plans to update its national educational materials by the end of 2026, and France announced it will abandon the Mercator projection to eliminate cartographic bias that distorts global perceptions.

The United States was the sole nation to vote against the measure, calling it an "ideological agenda" that distracts from core international priorities, while six countries abstained.

The resolution explicitly notes that the Mercator projection may still be used for maritime and aerial navigation, where its directional properties remain practical. Advocacy groups like Africa No Filter hailed the vote as an important milestone in dismantling colonial-era legacies, using the outcome to press global institutions, businesses, and digital platforms to adopt accurate geographic representations.

More than 150 years ago, as textile mills transformed Lewiston and attracted workers from across the world, community leaders recognized a problem that could prevent newcomers from establishing permanent roots: They needed access to financial services.

In 1870, community leaders established Androscoggin Bank in Lewiston to serve workers, including immigrants, arriving to work in the city’s mills. Today, the people coming to Maine are different, but the need for financial services that allow newcomers to build stable lives remains.

That history is now informing one of the bank’s newest initiatives: Rizq, a banking division focused on financial products designed to comply with Islamic principles.

However, LePage was the only one of the three candidates to appear at the event held at Compotech, a precision manufacturing company in Brewer. During his speech, Vance called Collins a “dear friend” who has visited him at his house a “half dozen times.”
