Reason #1,584 our childhood was AWESOME!

Everyone’s talking about AI wearables. Remember when a click of a reel took us around the world from the couch?

Jony Ive Says He Wants His OpenAI Devices to ‘Make Us Happy’ that’s the headline out of San Francisco, where the former Apple design chief talked about building a new family of AI devices with OpenAI, something beyond phones and laptops, built to calm us down instead of speed us up.

It made us think of a different kind of “device.” A red View-Master sitting on the coffee table, the living room caught in late-afternoon light. You’d lift it to your eyes, feel the plastic press against your cheek, and then, click. A soft, satisfying advance. Another tiny world. Another slide washed in that slightly faded film color only our childhood had.

No updates to install. No notifications. Just a tray of cardboard reels fanned out like a deck of passports. The Grand Canyon in three clicks. Safari animals in four. A national park you hadn’t seen yet, but somehow felt like you had after dinner, feet on the couch, someone saying, “My turn,” and you pretending not to hear.

The promise is gentler tech: something quieter, more human, more helpful. Back then, simple things did that job. The weight of the viewer in your hands. The little sunburst glare in the corner of a frame. Dust floating in the window light while a sitcom hummed from the next room. You didn’t scroll. You savored.

Maybe the point isn’t the gadget at all. Maybe it’s how it makes us feel, curious, connected, calm enough to share the view with the person next to us. New or old, the best “device” slows the room down and brings everyone a little closer.

Who else remembers that click?
