A quick update on what we’ve been working on this last week

Coming off the unexpected success and response to our Kit Mora episode, we’ve been reminded just how much it matters to put sustained attention on cases that haven’t received nearly enough of it.

Because of that, Shadows in the Pines is working more closely with members of the Spokane Tribe and leaders from other Indigenous nations to help bring MMIW/MMIP cases back to the center of attention across the Pacific Northwest.

There are people who have been missing for years whose names rarely appear in the news anymore. There are families still searching, still asking questions, and still fighting to keep their loved ones from becoming nothing more than a name on a missing-person list.

We want to use the platform we’ve built to help change that.

Moving forward, we’ll be dedicating more of our coverage to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and People, particularly cases that have received little sustained media attention. We’ll be listening to families, working with Indigenous communities and nation leaders whenever possible, and approaching these stories with the same detailed research and care we bring to every case we cover.

This isn’t about speaking for Indigenous communities. It’s about using our microphones to amplify the people who have already been speaking and deserve to be heard.

Some of these cases are going to be difficult to research. Some have remarkably little public information available. That makes telling these stories more important, not less.

The response to Kit’s story showed us that our listeners are willing to pay attention when someone puts these cases in front of them. So that’s exactly what we intend to keep doing.

If an episode puts a forgotten name back in front of the right person, starts a conversation that had gone quiet, or produces information that helps a family get closer to an answer, then our platform is doing exactly what we want it to do.

These people are not statistics. They have names. They have families. And they deserve to be remembered.

Kit Mora was 16 when they disappeared from Omak, Washington.

Their official missing date is in April 2022. But friends and family had stopped hearing from Kit months earlier.

So what happened during those missing months?

Kit is now 21 years old and is still missing. Their family is still searching. Their case is still open. And somebody may know something.
