I was a victim of a prank by one of the greatest pranksters ever to live. "Porky" Bickar, who on April Fool's Day in 1974, pranked the city of Sitka in Alaska by helicoptering and igniting 70 tires to make a black plume emerge from Mt. Edgecumbe, the dormant volcano looking over the town. I had a few interactions with Porky when I lived in Sitka in the 90s, but he pulled the volcano stunt when I was just under 2 months old and more than 2,500 miles away. The prank he did that got me, involved a tree that was in a remote stretch along the Alaska Ferry route. The ferry captain announced that we should all look to the port side as we passed a tree used for flamingos to nest -- the only spot like this in Alaska. I caught a glimpse of the pink in the tree on that side of the boat and with my 200mm telephoto lens captured a shot before I realized that the tree was just peppered with plastic flamingo yard decorations. Good one, Porky! You got me. I probably still have that negative and maybe a print photo in a box somewhere from that roll of 35mm film.

"People don't do this. We should be documenting things better. Our lives are kind of crazy." I think it was on Monday, April 29th, 2019. Minutes after we handed $6,500 in cash over to the car salesman to buy this truck from a Salt Lake City dealership. It was the first truck we looked at and the first dealership we went to. I had just landed on a flight from Thailand, and my wife and our son had flown in from India the day before. Two days later, the girl we were adopting was born. We were in Utah to adopt her... granted parental leave to leave our jobs at a school in India. We had to spend the next few weeks in the area for medical checks, legal proceedings and the other hoops that you need to do for adoptions, but add the urgency of needing to get a passport and Indian visa before we needed to be back to work on late July. Within a week we bought a travel trailer that would be our home for that summer. We hit lots of national parks and by the end of July 2019, before flying back to India, we were parking the truck and trailer at our home in Alaska.

During COVID we watched a lot of barnominium builds, tiny house tours, and bus conversions. Then we bought a bus. And did our own skoolie conversion.

Let's see what happens when I offer free rides in my auto rickshaw (tuk tuk) in India.

We have packrats on our land. Actual packrats. Not just my husband. So we used expanding foam to seal off every gap we could find on this bus, because I was not going to let any packrats get in there. But that was 10 months ago, and we're about to go back and see if it worked. I hope that there's not p**p everywhere.

Our daughter can talk to turkeys? We are at a resort in Ghana, and it inexplicably has some free-range turkeys. And the turkeys will only respond to our daughter, Raven.

Because we live much of the year overseas, when we travel, sometimes it is with a lot of bags. Much of our luggag is unique enough, but when we got these very generic-looking ones, we decided we needed to make it much easier to pick out our luggage on the carousel. It also dropped the chance of someone accidentally grabbing these bags to zero. Be sure to pick a paint that will work on plastics!

We really need to figure out an elegant solution to the bus drawers and big curves!

How dumb are we? Plastic wheel chocks had no chance at stopping our bus when hauling it up to our mountain property.

A frog settled into the driver's compartment of our daughter's toy dumptruck and her interactions with the frog were adorable

A Caterpillar tractor is such a great piece of equipment. Our neighbor treated us to some lessons on his.
