The MSBC Playwright Ministry and Nu-Gotcha Productions

The MSBC Playwright Ministry and Nu-Gotcha Productions Welcome to the official Playwright Ministry and Nu-Gotcha Productions of Morning Star Baptist Church, Spring Grove - Prince George County, Virginia page.

"WHERE YOU TOO CAN BE A STAR and WHATEVER YOU NEED, NU GOTCHA!" PURPOSE: Plays and songs are written by Director/Writer Zivan "NuJay" Holloway, Jr. and presented on the stage for people everywhere to see and participate in. Nu-Gotcha Productions is sponsored by Morning Star Baptist Church, Spring Grove, Virginia The Playwright Ministry is sponsored by Container First Services, Colonial Heights, Virginia, Mary Boothe-Jones, Mildred Holloway, and Zivan Holloway, Sr. The Playwright Ministry Positions A PRODUCER (theatrical producer) is a person who oversees all aspects of mounting a theatre production. The producer manages the overall financial and managerial functions of a production or venue, raises or provides financial backing, and hires personnel for creative positions (writer, director, designers, composer, choreographer—and in some cases, performers). The producer finds the script, hires the accountant, the director, and the cast, but often only includes casting approval from the “casting director”, if there is a specific one or the Director him or herself. A THEATRE DIRECTOR or stage director is a director in the theatre field who oversees and orchestrates the mounting of a theatre production (a play, an opera, a musical, or a devised piece of work) by unifying various endeavors and aspects of production. The director's function is to ensure the quality and completeness of theatre production and to lead the members of the creative team into realizing their artistic vision for it. The director therefore collaborates with a team of creative individuals and other staff, coordinating research, stagecraft, costume design, props, lighting design, acting, set design, stage combat, and sound design for the production. If the production he or she is mounting is a new piece of writing or a (new) translation of a play, the director may also work with the playwright or translator. In contemporary theatre, after the playwright, the director is generally the primary visionary, making decisions on the artistic concept and interpretation of the play and its staging. Different directors occupy different places of authority and responsibility, depending on the structure and philosophy of individual theatre companies. Directors utilize a wide variety of techniques, philosophies, and levels of collaboration. The role of an ASSISTANT THEATRE DIRECTOR include tracking daily progress against the filming production schedule, arranging logistics, preparing daily call sheets, checking cast and crew, maintaining order on the set. They also have to take care of health and safety of the crew. Responsibilities of an assistant director in theatre may include taking notes to actually staging parts of the play. A MUSICAL DIRECTOR decides what music and/or songs are needed for the show at the request of the director and/or choreographer, and figures out how to accomplish that. Ideally they would know how to read music, but a vocal or orchestral director should definitely know how to read music. So duties would include recruiting instrumentalists, and/or vocal trainer and/or recorded music, or doing those things themselves. The VOCAL COACH advises and instructs performers in proper vocal techniques in order to achieve fuller use of the vocal apparatus, and calls and/or supervises vocal warm-ups and rehearsals, or rehearsals when musical numbers are staged and singing is required. CHOREOGRAPHERS create and arrange original dances, combining steps and movements to form an artistic whole. They also develop new interpretations of traditional dances. Choreographers usually audition performers and teach them a dance at rehearsals. Choreographers work in all forms of dance, including classical ballet, modern, tap, jazz, folk, ethnic, ballroom, and ballroom. They must be knowledgeable not only about dance techniques but also about music, costumes, lighting, and drama. Choreographers work with opera companies and in musical theater, fashion shows, television, movies, music videos, dance schools, and commercials. A GENERAL MANAGER usually oversees the company’s marketing and sales functions as well as the day-to-day business operations. HOUSE MANAGEMENT concerns the selling of tickets, the ushering of patrons in front of house areas, and the maintenance and management of the theatre building itself. House management staff usually work for the theatre, under the supervision of the house manager, and not for the theatrical troupe which is currently occupying it. Often in regional or smaller theatres the responsibility falls under the aegis of the production manager. In any case, house management works closely with the production management team for the presentation of the theatrical production. In domestic services, "house management" refers to the overseeing of employees that make of the staff of the household, including but not limited to drivers, nannies, and housekeepers. The STAGE MANAGER is present at all performances. He/she communicates remotely with technical crew and calls all cues for lighting and sound effects, as well as coordinating the run crew for any scene changes that may be called for. The stage manager also assists with the production from the start. The stage manager should try being present at every stage rehearsal (and music rehearsal, if possible!). At the beginning of each rehearsal, the stage manager should call the cast to order and phone unexpectedly absent members. During rehearsal, the stage manager should maintain order in the cast and record blocking notes for the stage director. As production week approaches and the cast goes off book, the stage manager provides line cues when necessary. The stage manager may also deal with discipline problems within the cast, as well as various administrative tasks relating to the cast. Sometimes the rehearsal stage manager (who is present at rehearsals) is not the same person as the production stage manager (who runs the show). One or more assistant stage managers can make the task much easier, especially in a show with a large cast. In addition, the job of rehearsal stage manager is sometimes split among several people, which works well as long as they keep in close communication with one another. The PUBLICITY MANAGER’S job is to advertise the show. This is a process that begins long before opening night. The Publicity Manager must obtain all relevant information from the producer and directors and find a graphic designer for posters and flyers, as well as handle public announcements and mailings. Publicity avenues include, but are not limited to: •Newspaper announcements •Email announcements •Lecture Series Committee (LSC) slides (8.5'' x 11'' landscape) •Posters (17'' x 22'') and flyers (8.5'' x 11'') •Mass mailing (text messaging, picture mailing, etc.) The TICKET MANAGER ensures that tickets are available to be sold, and coordinates reservations. He or she should coordinate with the webmaster to handle online ticket reservations. The PROPS MANAGER is responsible for locating anything that will need to be carried by actors on stage. This may include weapons, bottles, luggage, wands, teapots, and anything else the director and cast may come up with. Many props can be found in our own props closet or borrowed from other theater groups or the cast. Sometimes some props will need to be made or built. The BOX OFFICE MANAGER works with the treasurer and supervises the house manager and usher(s). This person coordinates with the treasurer to make sure there is enough change before each show, and assists with the totals for deposit. They also maintain ticket sales and reservations, advise patrons of delays and help direct patrons into the theater with the help of the house manager. The RUN CREW performs set changes and other miscellaneous tasks as necessary during the show. The primary duty of the ORCHESTRA MANAGER is to recruit players for the orchestra and ensure that all aspects of the show involving the orchestra run smoothly. He/she should work closely with the music director and be aware of the concerns and needs of the orchestra members at all times. The Orchestra Manager is also responsible for scheduling rehearsal accompanists. A PERSONAL ASSISTANT or PERSONAL AIDE (PA) is someone who assists in daily business or personal tasks. For example, a businessman or businesswoman may have a personal assistant to help with time and daily management, scheduling of meetings, correspondence, and note taking. There are also personal assistants who work specifically for disabled people, and whose salaries may be paid by an individual or by social services on an individual's behalf. The role of a personal assistant can be varied, such as answering phone calls, taking notes, scheduling meetings, etc. In business or personal contexts, personal assistants are people who provide services that relieve his or her "employer" from tasks that are associated with managing one’s personal and/or business life. They assist with a variety of life management tasks, including running errands, arranging travel (e.g., travel agent services such as purchasing airline tickets, reserving hotel rooms and rental cars, and arranging activities, as well as handling more localized services such as recommending a different route to work based on road or travel conditions), finance (paying bills, buying and selling stocks), shopping (meal planning, "remembering" special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries and purchasing gifts) and fitness (exercise monitoring and motivation, as a personal trainer may do). The COSTUME DESIGNER creates a line of clothing and accessories for the cast. These ideas come from the script, time period of the play and the director. This person is also responsible for accommodating costume changes of the characters, as well as renting and/or sewing costumes. They also dry clean and/or wash costume and fabrics, and return rented costumes. A WARDROBE STYLIST is the job title of someone who selects the clothing for published editorial features, print or television advertising campaigns, music videos, concert performances, and any public appearances made by celebrities, models or other public figures. Stylists are often part of a larger creative team assembled by the client, collaborating with the fashion designer, photographer/director, hair stylist and makeup artist to put together a particular look or theme for the specific project. A wardrobe stylist can also be referred to as a fashion stylist, fashion editor, or celebrity stylist. According to one view, "Stylists are the people who push each celebrity to make the best dressed list," and assist with editorial photo shoots. The WARDROBE SUPERVISOR is responsible for supervising all wardrobe related activities during the course of a theatrical run. A DRESSER is a theatrical stagehand who is involved with maintaining costume quality at each performance. They are hired by either the director, producer, or wardrobe supervisor. They report directly to the wardrobe supervisor. Dressers are responsible for assisting cast members with costume changes backstage, when necessary. They are often used to assist primarily with quick costume changes, where a character exits and must enter again very quickly wearing a different costume. The LIGHTING DESIGNER (or LD) within theatre is to work with the director, choreographer, set designer, costume designer, and sound designer to create the lighting, atmosphere, and time of day for the production in response to the text, while keeping in mind issues of visibility, safety, and cost. The LD also works closely with the stage manager or show control programming, if show control systems are used in that production. The PROGRAM DESIGNER is responsible for assembling the program that will be handed to all audience members. He or she must collect information and bios from cast, crew, and orchestra members, manage the sale of program ads, lay out the design of the program, and arrange for it to be copied. The SET DESIGNER takes a concept drawing or description from the Stage Director and produces a detailed design. He/she must work in close collaboration with the Lighting Designer and Master Carpenter, so that a feasible design is produced. The design must include color choices, but it is not necessary to go into more construction detail than simple elevations and suggested ideas for construction. The SET DESIGNER sometimes works with a SCENIC ARTIST or SET PAINTER. In this case, the Scenic Artist would be someone with more interest in choosing colors and painting the scenic elements. There is often an ASSISTANT SET DESIGNER, who may provide additional skills or expertise, or may be learning the job. A GRAPHIC DESIGNER is a professional within the graphic design and graphic arts industry who assembles together images, typography or motion graphics to create a piece of design. A graphic designer creates the graphics primarily for published, printed or electronic media, such as brochures (sometimes) and advertising. They are also sometimes responsible for typesetting, illustration, user interfaces, web design, or take a teaching position. A core responsibility of the designer's job is to present information in a way that is both accessible and memorable. The MAKEUP ARTIST is responsible for ensuring that we have the proper makeup for the cast, and that they know how to use it. The Makeup Artist usually implements special makeup effects (such as age or ghosts), while helping teach cast members how to do their own basic makeup. The LIGHT BOARD OPERATOR is responsible for controlling the lights during the show. He or she is usually part of the lighting crew who helps the master electrician hang the lights during production week. During performances, he or she takes cues from the stage manager to change the lighting at the right times. The MASTER ELECTRICIAN makes the lighting plan happen. He organizes the light hang crew to get the lights hung from the lighting grid, focused, gelled, and connected to the dimmer board. The LIGHTING CREW assists the Master Electrician in installing lighting instruments and cabling. CALL BOY (or CALL GIRL) is the job title of a stagehand in the theatre. They are hired by the director, producer or stage crew chief (stage manager). They report directly to the crew chief, and will sometimes rotate between several groups from one performance to the next. The primary responsibility of the call boy or girl is to move from backstage to the dressing rooms and green rooms alerting actors and actresses of their entrances in time for them to appear on stage on cue. For example, they might call out, "You're on in five minutes, Miss Bernhardt." The call boy or girl also calls the "quarter hour" and "overture and beginners,"[1] the preparatory warning that signals for the orchestra to start the introductory music and the beginners, those performers who appear on stage at the beginning of the first act, to get into their opening positions. The call boy or girl also assists with scene changes. An ACTOR/ACTRESS is a person who acts in a dramatic or comic production and works in film, television, theatre, or radio in that capacity.

Mission: This ministry is to glorify God and to minister to audiences using the many talents of acting, singing, dancing, tech, stage crew work.
