Skoolie Spring

Not much life has happened outside of my dissertation, I’ve just been traveling from the same 3 parking lots day in and day out. Commuter lot to gym lot to university lot then many hours in the lab fixing bugs in my code, tuning parameters on the robotic setup or documenting data. My final experiments are happening next week and then I can focus on finishing up writing the chapters and defend in October.

I can taste the crisp mountain air of the west it’s just past the horizon but before that I’m installing a roof deck with donated steel and Skoolie.com deck mounts. Stay on the lookout for the install next week when the mounts arrive.

Other than that I am just looking forward to being able to live on the road driving in unknown places again and moving without a plan experiencing sceneries, food, and culture along less traveled paths.

Here’s to a summer of discovery and damn good food.

Tennessee Part II

Good food, great people, and even better riding conditions really sum up such a good week to relax before my final push to become a fully fledged scholar.

Other than bike park laps, completed a couple pedal laps to learn how well the hover drone works in the trees. Turns out that the DJI neo seems to preform better thanks to some experimentation that Joe and I did.

As for the bike park laps, I thought I was fast, but then I rode with Travis and getting gap 30 seconds in a two minute section was humbling.

All in all, I get so much enjoyment traveling and meeting new people and enjoying new experiences. These moments really reinforce the idea that building and living in a school bus was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

It’s not the drop that scares me, it’s the creek gap.

Gonna clean up the speed and get a little smoother on tomorrow’s laps.

Skoolie Diaries || Windrock Bike Park

Have a week to travel due to students being on spring break, no teaching, so I decided to take a trip to Tennessee to get some time on my bike while also finishing up a chapter of my dissertation.

The winter in Michigan has been harsh and I needed some warm weather to stay sane in this final push to finish my final degree.

Zion National Park

A quick drive through the national park to experience some incredible views before I head back to Michigan for a few months to finish up my PhD.
While it was quick, the landscape did not disappoint and in a future date I want to spend a little more time off the road and deep in the desert.

I drove to southern Utah with the goal of riding some of the trails at the old rampage site and luck couldn’t even explain what happened next. I pulled up without knowing where I was actually going and came across a bunch of vehicles with mountain bike racks.

I thought, this looks about right, and introduced myself to a bunch of strangers. These strangers ended up becoming some of the coolest and skillful mtbers that I spent the next couple days hanging out, exploring, and pushing my own skillset on new features that I was unfamiliar with approaching. really helped me with how to approach these features that I never would have by myself. were sending it, and I’m thankful that you allowed me to hang around.

Not to mention the craziness burger joint I had the pleasure to experience, probably my second favorite moment of the whole trip. With the top being able to conquer poopshoot without getting flushed

Here’s to the awesome experience and next time, I’ll be even more ready for the send 🤘
