"Faith without works is dead" has made a lot of people feel like they aren't doing enough for God. That's not what James is saying.

Look at the word. Dead. Not weak, not immature, not falling behind. We read this as a scale, like there's a line and enough good deeds gets you over it. He isn't measuring. He's diagnosing.

And look at his example. Not someone who served too little, but someone who told a hungry person to stay warm and eat well and then gave them nothing at all.

Think about breathing. A baby doesn't breathe in order to be born, it breathes because it was. But if it isn't breathing at all, something is very wrong, and that isn't a performance problem.

Works aren't how you earn the life. They're how you know there is one.

If somebody stopped you today and asked what God actually wants from you, could you answer in one sentence?
Micah gets it down to three things. Do what is right. Love mercy. Walk humbly with your God.

The verbs are doing something specific. Not believe what’s right, do it. That one shows up in your calendar and your bank account. Not do mercy, love it. God is asking you to actually want people to get better than they deserve, including the ones who don’t. And walk humbly, which is ongoing and daily and with somebody.

Right before this, Micah asks whether the answer is more. More offerings, more oil, more sacrifice. God says no. It’s three things.

“Iron sharpens iron” ends up on a lot of t-shirts and and we usually mean something like friendship is good for you.

But nobody who has ever sharpened a blade would read it that way. You don’t sharpen a knife with a pillow. You use something hard, it makes a sound, and material comes off. Sharpening is subtraction.

A few verses earlier Solomon says it without the metaphor: wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy. He chose the word wounds on purpose.

Which leads me to a question... Who in your life has permission to tell you that you’re wrong? Not who could. Who actually would, and knows you’d receive it.

Most of us have friends who agree with us and family who won’t risk it, and we call that being surrounded by good people. I would call it dull.

Who’s that person for you?

Romans 8:28 gets read at funerals and in hospital hallways, and most of the time we mean something good will come out of this.

But good according to whom? We hear "good" and picture the situation improving. The diagnosis reversing. The job coming through. And when it doesn't, the verse starts to feel like something people say because they don't know what else to say.

Paul defines the word in the very next sentence. We just stop reading before he gets there. The good is that you become like Jesus. That's the outcome God committed to, not comfort, not resolution, not an explanation.

Which changes everything about the hard thing you're in. It isn't an obstacle to the good. It's the material He's using to make it. And that's a promise that still holds in a room where nothing got fixed.

There's something you're carrying today that you've already prayed about more than once, and it's still sitting on your chest.

Peter says cast your cares on Him. Cast is a throwing word, the same one used when they threw their cloaks over the c**t Jesus rode into Jerusalem. You don't set worry down carefully. You throw it.

And the reason he gives isn't that worry is unproductive. It's that God cares about you. We treat anxiety like a discipline problem, something we should be better at managing. Peter treats it as a relationship fact.

The verse right before it says humble yourself first, and in the original those are one sentence. Which means holding on to worry is a form of pride. What is worry, really, except believing the outcome depends on you?
