I don't post raw SPC graphics too often, but let me illustrate why I'm a bit nervous for today's (4/27/26) severe weather event in St. Louis.

This level 4 is right over the top of St. Louis and the ENTIRE Metro area.

This is your reminder to make sure you know your severe weather safety plan and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings today. Since my day job no longer involves weather, I won't be able to track these storms. I will encourage you to follow KMOV for the latest - Steve has a GREAT team there.

Good to see the limited return of Alton’s Woody’s Chicken is as popular as I thought it would be. For reference, the Alton Little Theater lot is FULL as of this post, with the line all the way down to a Karate center 1/2 mile down per Apple Maps. Heard a staffer say the line was all the way down Henry Street and back to Alton Fire Station 1 on 20th, but I’m unable to confirm. Wouldn’t be surprised if that WAS the case, though.

UPDATE: All 4 kids were found safe at 1:30p Saturday and were being evaluated. Suspect still at large.

Illinois friends: Statewide AMBER Alert has been issued for four children abducted out of the Chicago-area suburb Riverdale early Saturday morning. See below for details.

Authorities are asking the public for help locating four children who were abducted in Illinois on Saturday when a suspect drove off with a car while they were in the back seat.

Firstly, the big personal news: I'm moving to Wisconsin for family/personal reasons. Alabama has been "home" my whole life, so this will be quite the change for me.

Probably one of the biggest Friday news dumps I've ever seen.

Wishing WLRH 89.3 FM/HD the best going forward as a non-NPR non-commercial outlet. My donation to the arts voice of the Tennessee Valley will of course continue...and I'll definitely be tuning the car radio to 89.3 the next time I'm in the listening area.

"With fear for our democracy," I write this post. (Would've written it yesterday, but work is keeping me plenty busy getting ready for the start of the fall semester in a few days)

Everybody ready for fewer local newsrooms in your TV market now that the rumored Nexstar/TEGNA deal is official?

In Huntsville, this means you'll have WHNT 19 (CBS), WHDF 15 (CW), AND WZDX 54 (Fox) all under ONE ROOF, with WAFF 48 (NBC) and WAAY 31 (ABC) under the only other roof in town should the Gray/Allen Media deal be approved.

In St. Louis, that will merge the existing KTVI 2 (Fox) and KPLR 11 (CW) duopoly with KSDK 5 (NBC). And since Sinclair doesn't do local news on KDNL 30 (ABC), that leaves Gray-owned KMOV 4 (CBS) as the ONLY other commercial TV newsroom in town.

And that's just TWO markets out of MANY that will see consolidation accelerate like fire should this deal be approved.

If you're not already supporting your local public media outlet(s), now is a GREAT time to do so to keep these corporate conglomerates honest in a world of consolidated local news.

Irving, Texas-based Nexstar will pay $22 in cash for each share of Tegna's outstanding stock.

Never thought I’d see the day that one company could LEGALLY own two full-power major network affiliates in one market outright. Huntsville’s WAAY 31 is ABC and WAFF 48 is NBC; Gray will also own Paducah’s WSIL 3 in addition to its existing KFVS 12.

Rumors are also flying that Nexstar is going to make a bid for TEGNA. If that deal happens, that could consolidate Huntsville’s WHNT 19 (CBS, and my former station), WHDF 15 (CW), and WZDX 54 (Fox); as well as St. Louis’s existing KTVI 2 (Fox)/KPLR 11 (CW) duopoly with KSDK 5 (NBC, and my internship station), giving Nexstar a TRIOPOLY in a major market.

Folks, this is a red alert for independent media voices…and why I’ve been a sustaining member of STL and Huntsville’s public radio stations for nearly a year now.

Gray Media, the parent company of WAFF 48, is announcing a major purchase agreement that will see the company acquire multiple television stations across the country, including WAAY 31 in Huntsville.
