Why does your cat suddenly turn into the slowest creature on earth right when you're trying to walk past them? It's not on purpose. It's trust.
Cats that feel safe don't rush. A relaxed, slow pace usually means they're completely comfortable around you. As they walk slowly past your legs, they're also leaving scent from glands in their paws and body, quietly marking you as theirs — slow movement means more contact time, more scent left behind. Sometimes it's also just attention-seeking, especially near feeding time.
But here's the one exception worth knowing: if a normally fast-moving cat suddenly starts walking slowly all the time, not just around you, that's not affection. That can be a sign of pain or illness, and it's worth a vet visit.
So the rule of thumb is simple — slow walking around you with normal energy otherwise means trust. Slow walking constantly, with less activity overall, means it's time to check in with a vet.
