✨ EMDR and play therapy are a match made in heaven for children.

In this episode of Notice That, we sit down with Christine Mark-Griffin—EMDR child therapist, trainer, and author—to explore what happens when we step into the world of the child and bring EMDR with us.

🎧 From Roblox safe places to coloring book interventions to helping parents become co-regulators, Christine shares how creativity and connection open doors for healing that no protocol alone ever could.

After a year away, The Evidence Based Therapist returns. This comeback episode is part reflection, part reunion, and part reimagining of what this space means for us—and for you.

🎙 Bridger and Caleb talk about life’s unexpected turns, what they’ve been reading (spoiler: lots of consciousness and philosophy of science), and the creative projects that grew in the quiet.

It’s good to be here again. Join us as we pick up where we left off—together.

We explore what's in and out for therapists: ditching panic, embracing personal therapy, grounding research, accepting fitting clients, and trusting our knowledge. We discuss barefoot is in and unzipping is life.

We explore inclusivity, dark humor, and the importance of community among EMDR clinicians. We also discuss EMDR's global perspective and beyond BLS. Let's stop excluding and start embracing diverse approaches in our field.

Your brain isn’t made of isolated parts—it’s an interconnected ecosystem.

For decades, we were taught a modular view of the brain. Fear? That’s the amygdala. Memory? That’s the hippocampus. Attention? The prefrontal cortex. Simple, neat, and… wildly incomplete.

When trauma strikes, it doesn’t just “switch on” these parts—it overwhelms entire networks of your brain that are meant to work together in balance.

Here’s how:

🔄 The Default Mode Network (DMN) is where your sense of self lives. It’s your autobiographical story, mental time travel, and inner reflection.
⚡ The Salience Network (SN) scans your inner and outer world for danger and tells your brain where to focus.
🧭 The Central Executive Network (CEN) helps you plan, regulate, and take action.

When these three networks are integrated, life feels cohesive. You know who you are, you can notice and respond to your environment, and you can make choices that align with your values.

But trauma?
It shatters that integration.

⚠️ The salience network goes on overdrive: everything feels like a threat.
⚠️ The DMN collapses into shame, rumination, or dissociation.
⚠️ The CEN? Offline. No regulation. No sense of agency.

This is why trauma doesn’t feel past tense—it feels like it’s happening now.

💡 This is where EMDR comes in.

Through bilateral stimulation (BLS) and dual attention tasks, EMDR:
✨ Helps calm the salience network’s hypervigilance
✨ Invites the CEN back online for regulation and choice
✨ Allows the DMN to reintegrate the traumatic memory as “then,” not “now”

It’s not just about reducing distress—it’s about helping the brain’s systems work together again.

This episode of Notice That dives into how EMDR supports network-level healing rather than just targeting individual symptoms.

June EMDR Basic Training – Highlight Reel

This month, we had the honor of guiding another incredible cohort through their EMDR Basic Training journey. What a joy to witness the curiosity, courage, and community that emerged over these five powerful days.

From instructional learning to practice exercises, each moment reminded us why we love this work. EMDR is more than a protocol—it’s a path toward presence, safety, and healing.

To our June trainees: thank you for showing up fully. Your presence made this training something special, and we’re so grateful to be part of your journey.

🎥 Here’s a glimpse into the connection, learning, and transformation we shared together.

One of the common reasons why clients may struggle in the EMDR process is because their body is not prepared to fully feel what they need to in order to process the material we are working on. Shapiro stated repeatedly that in order for Phase 4 Reprocessing to be effective the client has to be ready to feel all the emotions and sensations associated with the target memory. Often, clients are phobic of those emotions and sensations. We can help them get ready to feel what they will need to feel by directly preparing the body to allow experience of previously overwhelming sensations and emotions to move through and be released. This means working to expand their window of tolerance not just in a general way, but in a focused and experiential process to treat any phobias of the raw affect states they will need access to later in Phase 4. This Body specific preparation process requires a slow but steady introduction to the sensational experience of the present moment and of the impact of the past. This goes way beyond “Where do you feel that in your body?” And teaches the client (and us) to listen to the constant communications of the subconscious through the body in its many forms. The body speaks through sensation, energy, pain, illness, impulse, desire, stillness, movement, relaxation, rigidity and much more. We can learn to listen and prepare our clients to do the same.

Join me for the 6 month series “EMDR with the Body in Mind” to learn how to work through all the phases of EMDR from a body based perspective. This course has new scripts for every phase. The next cohort starts in 2 weeks July 9th from 1:30-3pm! If you can’t make all the calls live they will be recorded so you can watch them later. I won’t be offering this again until I return from maternity leave in Spring of 2026. Hope to see you there.

Hello everyone! It’s time to register for the Fall Cohort of the Body in Mind Somatic Therapy training.
This training includes two 3-day training sessions from 10am-4pmCST on the following days:
August 21-23
October 2-4
There will also be Practicum Sessions which must be attended live on the following days:
9/2 12-1:30pmCST
9/23 12-1:30pmCST
10/21 12-1:30pmCST
11/4 12-1:30pmCST
We will learn how to guide clients into the somatic and subconscious layers of awareness and processing using Somato-Symbolic Processing. You will receive scripts and modality specific training to apply SSP with your clients immediately. The practicum sessions focus on learning to use SSP as one modality that brings together the wisdom of working with the body in mind into direct interactions with our clients. It is also designed to blend with EMDR so you can practice EMDR as a somatic therapy.
You will also learn other embodied practices to help clients identify sensational awareness through neuroception, interoception, proprioception, and exteroception. We will learn that working somatically with clients is not rocket science, it’s a soft and slow art that requires creativity and deep attunement in the present moment.
Our desire in this training is to provide you with the theoretical foundation and the practical support structures to begin working in more embodied collaboration with your clients. Becoming a somatic therapist is an amazing asset to your practice and this training will help you feel confident in working directly with the body through all phases of therapy.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the training and whether it’s a good fit for you! [email protected]
