R.I.P. DETECTIVE BOB KEPPEL (1944-2021). When you read the case files concerning the disappearances of Janice Ott and Denise Naslund, you can see how many hours these detectives devoted to tracking down the suspect, later identified as Ted Bundy. Bob passed away today and all I can say is, "Thank you, for your years of service, sir."

I wanted to thank former Colorado State Trooper Jim Loyd for our telephone interview this afternoon. Jim's assigned area was Aspen and he was on duty when Ted Bundy jumped from the courthouse window. Jim shared with me his movements and assignments that memorable day and they'll be detailed in the upcoming book.

Sad to report that Deputy Larry Spiers passed away (wearing cowboy hat in pic). I was privileged to interview him last August for the book. He shared with me his memories of the 1977 manhunt for Ted Bundy. His involvement with the aerial reconnaissance as well as his work at the Kaeser cabin are wonderful contributions to the project and he will be missed.

Today’s telephone interview with Chet Zajac, formerly of the Aspen PD, was educational and hilarious. In his early twenties, he had only been on the job a few weeks when Ted Bundy jumped from the courthouse in June ’77. His superiors handed him a shotgun, a box of shells, a radio, a flashlight, his standard service revolver, and told him to inspect the Red Mountain district north of town. With his cowboy hat, duster, mustache, and shotgun, he looked like Doc Holliday, inspecting vacant homes, looking for the fugitive.

David Stapleton, Sr. (1934-2020) died of COVID-19 in Grand Junction, CO. I had a recorded telephone interview with him in July. As a civilian who had built some remote cabins for mountaineers and skiers, Dave was tapped by Sheriff Kienast to go out and inspect those cabins, to look for the fugitive Ted Bundy (June '77). The sheriff assigned a deputy to be Dave's bodyguard. The mild-mannered insurance salesman was extremely nervous, but wanted to protect his family and his community. RIP Dave.

Sheri and I are moving forward with pre-production work on our 4-5-episode docuseries concerning the 1986 Mount Hood Tragedy. Updates will be made on our Code 1244 page. We thank everyone for their patience as we’ve been busy this last year renovating, selling our townhouse, and moving to Springfield. We’re settled in our new home and eager to pursue this project.

Enjoyed a highly entertaining recorded telephone interview this evening with filmmaker, Marty Stouffer. He spent 24 hours in a cell with Ted Bundy in the Pitkin County Jail in February 1977. Marty was able to explain to me cell layout, jail conditions, and his personal observations of Bundy (L to R: Marty Stouffer and John Denver).

There is a picture depicting a newspaper on the bench seat of the Caddy Ted Bundy stole in Aspen. The picture was taken during daylight hours and it shows a copy of The Aspen Times, Bundy’s picture plastered alongside the headlines on the front page. In December, I corresponded with Deputy Higgins [who recaptured Bundy, alongside Deputy Gene Flatt]. Higgins stated that this newspaper was not present in the vehicle when she searched it. She surmises that it might have been placed there for a “photo opportunity,” once the car was impounded (SOURCE: Higgins, Maureen, Correspondence with author, The Caddy Stop, December 23, 2019).

Wanted to thank Deputy Gary White, formerly of the Pitkin County Sheriff's Department. Gary was actively involved in the June '77 manhunt for Ted Bundy. He was with the search dogs Tuesday and Wednesday, over the skies of Aspen in a helicopter, and manning a roadblock near Ruedi Reservoir. He rarely grants interviews, so I appreciate his trust in me and support of this project.

Very informative recorded telephone interview with Jill Sheeley this evening. She shared with me her memories of what it was like to be hiding under a bed in Aspen, armed with a fireplace poker, believing Bundy was trying to get inside. It's been 43 years since Bundy's first escape yet the citizens will never forget (Photo: The Aspen Times).

It took me a year, but I have finally identified the man in this historic photo. It's none other than Deputy Gary White of the Pitkin County Sheriff's Department. The Sheriff's posse is forming and Gary has his bandolier and shotgun ready to contribute to the manhunt.

I enclose a pic that Mark Lewy took at the Kaeser cabin near Aspen on Saturday afternoon, June 11, 1977. (L to R): Dep. Gary White in uniform, unidentified man, Sheriff Kienast in sweater vest. I’m trying to identify the man in the center. I thought it was CBI Agent Leo Konkel, but I recently interviewed Konkel and he says it’s not him. Anyone recognize him?
