Hayfield at South County. 7:00 tonight in Lorton.

South County is 1-0. Dylan Miller went 13 of 20 for 232 yards with three total touchdowns at Gainesville, Amare Acheampong put up 131 all-purpose yards, and Jonah Hardesty did not allow a completion.

Hayfield is 0-1. Terrance Veney ran for 146 yards and scored at Mount Vernon, Kayden Collins had an interception and two breakups in his first game at safety, and Tyson Taylor-Williams had a sack and two tackles for loss.

Both teams are led by a head coach in his first fall running the program. Tonight is the first time Jonte Craig and Liam Yao coach this one from the top.

Wakefield football opens the season under new head coach Brian Slay, who is emphasizing fundamentals and competitiveness after several losing seasons and 24 straight district losses. Senior quarterback Judah Connor returns for his third year as starter to lead a more balanced offense, with the Warriors hosting Falls Church tonight at 7 p.m.

Saint Frances Academy enters the season ranked No. 4 in the country. Scrimmages start tonight. Twelve of them across Northern Virginia, most kicking at six.

This week's RPO Weekly is out, and the biggest story is one nobody's really covered: Battlefield, Unity Reed, Patriot and Hylton all accepted a move down to Class 5 without filing a single appeal. That decision reshuffles the postseason bracket and drops them in with Stone Bridge, Briar Woods, Potomac Falls, Annandale, Falls Church and Mount Vernon starting in 2027.

Also in this week's edition: every high school in Loudoun County will field a girls flag football team this fall, a St. James safety is the only Northern Virginia player on USA TODAY's first-team All-USA East defense, and I wrote a note about the three practices I got to this week.

Said Aziz has won district titles at both Falls Church and Hayfield. He takes over an Oakton team that returns an All-State defensive back headed to Harvard, a quarterback coming off 2,486 yards and 24 touchdowns, and a junior receiver already holding seven offers who didn't play tackle football until eighth grade.

We spent a practice with the Cougars and talked to Aziz, Deylen Jones, Jack Martin, Jacob Milazzo, Brayden Vazquez and Collin Henriques about what a new staff actually changes.

One of them put the season this way: "If we win but we're not enjoying it, then I don't know if I can call that a win."

Season opens August 28 at Edison.

Kyle Lewis found Evan Graumann in the corner of the end zone at West Springfield's Blue-Orange scrimmage Saturday evening.

Scrimmage football doesn't count for anything in the standings. It counts for plenty in the huddle.

We stopped by West Springfield High School this past weekend for their annual Blue/Orange scrimmage, and the pads were POPPIN.
First live football of the year. Both sides of the ball got after it, and you could feel the season getting close.
