You don’t have to ski to spend a few days in the Dolomites in winter.

My honeymoon clients wanted a Christmasy, cozy mountain stop to round out their honeymoon. That made Ortisei an especially good fit.

Ortisei turns into “Christmas Town” during December with holiday lights and decorated wooden stalls winding through the village streets. It’s exactly the festive mountain atmosphere to round out the Italy portion of their honeymoon!

One of the decisions I make when planning a full itinerary is where it makes sense to spend more — and where it doesn’t.

With only two nights in Florence and plenty they want to experience, location was the top priority here. I chose FH55 Hotel Calzaiuoli right in the historic center, where they can walk out the door and immediately be in the middle of Florence. Rather than spending more on a luxury hotel they’ll have very little time to enjoy, I booked them into a Junior Suite with a view of the Duomo and put more of their budget toward experiences.

They’ll have a private half-day in Chianti tasting w**e, a Florence cooking class, and an early visit to see David before departing.

Luxury travel doesn’t mean choosing the most expensive option at every stop. Sometimes it means knowing when the hotel is the experience — and when the better choice is a great room in the right location, with more of the budget going toward what you came to experience.

These honeymoon clients came to me with one must-do experience in Rome (a marriage blessing by the Pope!), a sense of how they wanted their honeymoon to feel (festive and full of holiday atmosphere), and a few ideas about places and experiences they might like to include. Beyond that, they were looking for guidance on what would work best for a December honeymoon.

That’s where full itinerary planning comes in.

I took their priorities, travel style, timing and budget and worked through how the trip should actually fit together — which destinations made sense, how long to spend in each, where to save and when to splurge, how to get from place to place, and which experiences were worth planning ahead.

The result is a honeymoon that will take them from Rome to Florence, into the Dolomites, and finally to Munich for a little Christmas market magic before flying home.

Connecting rooms. Two words that can cause a lot of trouble, particularly in Europe.

For this family of four heading to Athens next summer, the kids are young enough that connecting rooms were a priority. I worked directly with my contacts at this 5-star hotel to confirm the connecting configuration they needed.
