The castle as we see it today has undergone many transformations during its long and rich history. Jehan II de Latour had two main buildings built around 1475. Soon, a beautiful Renaissance-style residence was built, surrounded by sumptuous French gardens, desired by Jean-Louis de Courbon in the first half of the 17th century.
But from the 18th century onwards, the gardens were somewhat forgotten. In 1817, the estate was sold at auction. In 1920, a certain Paul Chénereau responded to the call of the writer Pierre Loti published in Le Figaro, and began major restorations of the château. The gardens regained their splendor between 1928 and 1939, while the château was gradually refurnished! A "sound and light" show was even imagined in the 1960s. However, since the whole thing was built on marshes, the gardens sank a little more each year... The solution? From 1976 to 2000, no fewer than 3,000 stakes were planted to support the gardens.
