Former Post-Dispatch reporter Virginia Baldwin Gilbert writes in this guest column:
Looking back at the quotes in my story, I’m struck by how timely her words were then and still are. The headline summarizes it: “Women Must Persevere, Steinem says.”
She celebrated her 60th birthday that year. She said, "After 60, you return to that clear-eyed, ‘I know what I want, I know what I think’ true self.” And feminism is taking the same road to maturity, she said.
.. We’ve lost both Dolly Parton and Gloria Steinem, two role models of strong women who will be hard to replace. But I picture both of them shaking their heads at our sorrow and telling us: It doesn’t end with us. Don’t stop now.
