MEET COMFREY

When it is time to harvest herbs for dehydration, I start with the wonder plant Comfrey. Also known as 'knit bone' for its ability to heal bones.

I will make a salve that can be used on aches and pains, sprains and bruises just not open wounds.

Comfrey is a powerhouse plant great as a fertilizer because it pulls up nutrients from deep in the soil. Chop and drop around plants, bushes and tomatoes, anything that likes NPK.

Comfrey is super to plant next to fruit trees at the drip line to chop and drop and it is a fabulous pollinator too.

You can cut the entire plant back to the ground to harvest the leaves and viola it grows right back!

Bocking 14 is the variety of comfrey that does not multiply by seed, but by roots that are super easy to propogate. Cows, sheep, goats and chickens love it too.

Be sure to add comfrey to your garden but wait before you do.... Choose a corner or a fence line where you will want it for life because eradicating it is almost impossible. But you won't want to because of all it wonder gifts.

It makes a perfect liquid fertilizer when chopped and squeezed into a 5 gallon bucket with water. The smell will keep anyone you don't like out of your garden and your plants, veggies and fruits will thank you.

Meet comfrey.

Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGD) are designed to bark away predators. They have done so for thousands of years watching sheep from times before time. This quality is why and how a homestead can have other animals. They stand their ground and announce to the world, this is my space and you dare not enter it. Usually they work in pairs to defend coyote, and depending on what region of the world you live, wolves, bear, mountain lion and leopards.

Their joy is wrapped up in their service. While it is not a quiet nightly endeavor when you add 3 additional little wanna be pups, I can say that whatever thought it could dig up the yard upon our temporary absence shall not even ponder doing so ever again.

The dogs traveled with me when my Mom went on hospice, something one never knows the timing of. They journied in my tiny car to camp out in my tiny RV, with a tiny yard like normal dogs and ones who live in apartments or cars with their owners.

They were more peaceful I think, not more purposeful. Did they bark? Oh yes, but more so at my absence when I left our encampment or at the cats a plenty. Sure they responded to the Kansas plains of coyote packs but my 747 AC unit deafened their capacity to hear the need for their 24/7 watch.

Which one brings us happiness? Purpose or peace? I shall ponder the idea of a dab of both.

Mom is on hospice and this in the only place I want to be holding her hand.

She is slowing less responsive as these photos were several days ago.

My extremely busy homesteading life on 70 acres, mowing and brush hogging, and w**d whacking, with a huge organic garden with 18 raised beds and my Treehouse on The Magic Land must wait.

The garden has 4 timers going in every directions to water without me. The tomatoes rotting on the vines. The cucumbers larger than life and hopefully a random rabbit is eating my watermelon.

I am watching the sunrise in Kansas with my 4 dogs in my tiny RV parked on a friend's farm an hour from my Mom.

My brood of foul with
lots of chickens, geese, quail and a turkey are temporarily housed at another friend's barn.

Life can change in an instant to reveal our true priorities. Family means the most to me and I am so grateful for my amazing friend who have stepping in to impersonate me.

What are you dreaming about that would make your heart full?

People always ask me why we don't have kitties on Treehouse on The Magic Land? I love cats and kittens and just had the opportunity to be with them everyday for a few weeks. They are sweet, affectionate, adorable, funny, cuddly (some of them) spookie, hungry and curious.

They hung out by my RV. I did make the mistake of feeding tuna to the little tiny one who needed more for his itsy bitsy body. And then I became the cat lady to a group who knew they had my number.

And attempting to load my friend's truck from my RV to leave was almost impossible with them all over the steps, popping into the RV whenever I opened the door. Climbing on the screen and my legs and weaving between my feet as I carried bags and boxes of too much stuff I brought.

I was sure a couple of them would stow aways and would pop out when I got home from the bed of the truck.

Okay maybe secretly that sounded fun. And there are some no cat factors I navigate.

Allergic.
I love song birds and feed them.
I love baby chicks.
My dogs are sure cats are squirrels and meant to be chased, exept Skeeter.

And when I visit my sister's house and my friends farm, I get to soak up all the cat cuteness to last me between visits.

I see why there are crazy cat ladies.

The hardest part of being a homesteader is getting away. On The Magic Land Homestead I have a huge garden, 16 raised beds and 2 in ground beds that must be watered 2 times a day because of the daily heat warnings. 3 sprinklers set on individual timers so as not to lower the water pressure for all.

We are not speaking of w**ds please.

Gratefully, I have amazing friends who can navigate my Treehouse on The Magic Land guest's and my funky farm A-Frame people who come to enjoy 70 private acres in the woods.

Did I mention 15 chickens, a turkey who can spot a snake 20 yards away, 4 adorable dogs that are wondering where their Mom went? And now 2 less quail because I did not secure the bottom of the hardware cloth property in the cage that used to have 6 of them. I just built it with my friend at 10 pm at night dripping in the sweaty summer humidity before visiting my 92 year old Mom with Alzheimer's 5 hours away.

I am exactly where I want to be.

Getting away for more that 6 minutes is extremely challenging when the responsibilities are grand.

Yet from where ai sit in the nursing home with my dear sweet Mother, I cannot brushhog 20 acres of w**ds and grass, nor mow with the riding mower (because it is currently broken), or w**d whack a zillion sidewalks that are part of my "should be" weekly routine.

I trustingly lay that in the hands of others. Ones that should wear sashes and crowns and shoulder pins for showing up for me.

All these things are left to the crew who is also making sure the 2 frog ponds have water and the tiny wrens nest with 5 little babies is safe from predators.

I am many people and in reality there should be 20 mini me's.

If you are envisioning this incredibly magical life in the country focusing on self sufficiency, and living a sustainable lifestyle with animals and growing your own organic garden, ponder for 7 minutes before you leap. Better yet, book a week in my Treehouse or A-Frame and tag along with my chores.

Exhaustion will follow and you will either be more excited to accplosh your big hairy arse goals, or you'll toss away your pipe dreams of homesteading.

What would we do without Wildlife Rescue Center? Yes, please send some well wishes or a donation to help their non-profit. I got to drop off the poor male box turtle that I found last night that was injured and to pick up the sweet female turtle who had a growth on her neck removed from their amazing vet. Sge a ll be released exactly where I found her. We are a turtle friendly place on The Magic Land Homestead!
