We're mourning the passing of the oldest WWII veteran, Lawrence Brooks, at the extraordinary age of 112.

Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1940 at age 31, Lawrence served with the segregated 91st Engineer Battalion. Sent to the Pacific, he spent the war in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines — driving trucks through rough terrain, cooking and caring for officers, and helping build the roads, bridges, and airstrips that kept Allied forces moving forward.

After the war ended, he came back to New Orleans, spent decades working as a forklift operator, raised five children, and lived to watch his family grow across generations.

In a life that stretched more than a century, he showed what steady service and quiet strength look like.

God bless Lawrence Brooks, and thank you for your service.
