The house was silent.
Only the soft hum of a bedside lamp and the faint creak of old floorboards moved through the darkness.
Barefoot and half-awake, Elena stood in the hallway in her white pajama top, one hand gripping the edge of a half-open wooden door.
Warm amber light spilled through the crack and touched her face.
At first, she had only come out because she heard whispers.
But now she couldn’t move.
Inside the bedroom, her husband sat on the edge of the bed.
Very close to his silver-haired mother.
Too close.
His shoulders were tense. His head was low. His voice was barely more than a whisper, but every word struck Elena like glass.
“I can’t do this anymore, Mom...” he said, his voice breaking. “I don’t know how long I can keep pretending.”
Elena froze.
Pretending?
A tear instantly gathered in her eye.
Her fingers tightened around the door.
The older woman lifted her hand sharply, warning him.
“Lower your voice,” she whispered. “You’ll wake her.”
That hurt even more.
Not her name.
Not “Elena.”
Just her.
As if she were only a problem sleeping in the next room.
Elena’s lips parted, but no sound came out.
Her whole body went cold.
Inside, her husband dragged a hand across his face. His jaw tightened. He looked like a man standing on the edge of something terrible.
Then he looked up at his mother and said, more firmly this time:
“Maybe it’s time she wakes up.”
Another tear slid down Elena’s cheek.
Her breathing turned shaky.
Her mind raced through every smile, every promise, every night he had held her and told her she was safe.
Was all of it fake?
Was all of it something he had been forced to do?
Or worse...
something he had chosen?
She leaned just slightly closer to the door, desperate and terrified at the same time.
Inside, the older woman’s expression changed.
Not guilt.
Not shame.
Fear.
Real fear.
That was when Elena’s bare foot shifted.
A tiny floor creak broke the silence.
The older woman’s eyes snapped toward the door.
Elena gasped softly.
