The Kingdom of God is Advancing:
In Matthew 16:18, Jesus says, “I will build my church, and the GATES of hell shall not prevail against it.” Gates are not an offensive weapon, they are defensive! This suggests that the church is not called to retreat or merely endure, but rather to push forward, even against the strongholds of darkness. Hell, then, is in a defensive posture, and it’s afraid of the power and authority Christ has given to His church.

Christ’s Victory Over Sin and Death: Theologically, this verse points to the ultimate victory that Christ won over sin, death, and the devil. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus disarmed the powers of darkness (Colossians 2:15). Hell's gates signify the boundaries that Christ’s redemptive work is breaking down—freeing people from bo***ge and reclaiming territory for God’s Kingdom.

The Authority Given to Believers: In context, Jesus’s statement about the gates of hell comes just after Peter confesses Jesus as the Messiah. Jesus then speaks about giving the “keys of the kingdom” (Matthew 16:19). This indicates that the church, built on the foundation of faith in Jesus, is empowered to bring freedom, truth, and transformation, breaking through hell’s barriers to reach the lost and hurting.

The Nature of Hell's Fear: So, what is hell afraid of? Hell fears the advance of the Kingdom of God, which brings hope, life, and freedom. It fears the authority of believers who carry Christ’s light and the relentless love of God that seeks out every lost soul. Hell's "gates" represent the attempt to contain its power against the relentless advance of God's purpose.

How This Transforms Our Perspective
Understanding that the church is on the offense shifts the Christian outlook from one of defense to one of confidence and action. We’re reminded that, because of Christ, the church holds power to reclaim and restore, even in the darkest places. The call, then, is to live boldly, bringing light, love, and truth into every area of life without fear, knowing that God has already secured the victory.

This invites us to see the spiritual battle not as one we’re losing, but as one in which we’re moving forward with God’s authority and purpose.

It's good to vote, but your prayers are powerful. They carry directly to the ears of Jesus.
