Classical-ish with Nutmeg

Classical-ish with Nutmeg Classical-ish is an experimental classical music radio show. I'll play more than just old white dudes.

Classical-ish is an intrepid foray into the genre non-conforming outer edges of the classical universe, where women who make beautiful noise, non-Western modalities, sonic experimentation and composers of color are what’s happening. Join host Nutmeg as she sets out to prove that there’s more to classical music than just old white dudes. We'll be broadcasting from SI Makerspace on alternate Sundays from 10am-12pm starting July 2nd.

Friends. Today's show was pretty special. It felt like radio, visual art, live performance, experimental music and sating conversation all at once, with blurred lines (literal and figurative) and much DIY.

Watching Si Golraine create is real and hypnotic.

(thank you Makerspace NYC for letting us have our way with your conference room).

NEXT SUNDAY MAY 19th, 10am on makerparkradio.nyc - LIVE PAINTING with Si Golraine.

I will be having the incredible multidisciplinary artist Si Golraine in the studio, live painting to co-curated classical and experimental music, discussing the intersection of music and visual/performance art and exploring Si's musical background and collaboration with experimental music mavericks Feeding Goats among other things. I am STOKED.

Between the hundreds of cyclists whizzing by in the rain and about five mins of a lopsided mono signal, it was an interesting, challenging and always delightful show. I really enjoyed an over 100-year old recording of Finnish opera singer Aino Ackté... crackle crackle.

I'd love to know what you think.

SUNDAY 5/5 - tune in to makerparkradio.nyc at around 10am ET for the usual odd and beautiful patina of experimental classical music- with a generous helping of painfully beautiful string quartets, the harp, a bit of musical box and a traditional Korean instrument or two.

My Easter show!

I think I'm getting weirder. In the best way. I love the huge, beautiful, challenging and kinda inscrutable world of classical and experimental classical music. Glad to share it in my small way especially coz we are getting the sound in the studio so dialed.

(special thanks to Tom for helping some of us jerks play our shows on a holiday weekend)

I am going to play you some pretty metal experimental classical music tomorrow morning, April 7 at 10am ET or thereabouts.

You can tune in on makerparkradio.nyc, here on Facebook (until they shut me down mid-show) or get our free iPhone app.

As always, it'll be stirring, potentially sexy and experience-provoking... for better or worse.

(also I want metal braces in real life 😍)

SUNDAY 3/24- 10-ish am ET. My sense of humor may be infantile but my music taste is a thing of preternatural sophistication.

Join me during my very serious classical music hour for a Spring-like selection of unusual, beautiful, romantic things- Jennifer Higdon, Hyacinthe Jadin, Faure, Laurie Anderson, Ruo Huang, Arvo Pärt, Henry Cowell, a ton of string quartets and totally Mister Rogers.

Everybody's freaking out about Mercury retrograde. Meanwhile, my sign (Gemini) is supposedly ruled by Mercury and I just spent over 2 hrs with 3 computers, 2 CDJ's, 3 different mixers plus livestream audio, TOO many cameras, 3 microphones, 2 turntables, a bunch of programs, a limiter/compressor, a sleeping serato box and a space heater for good measure and-

1. I started on time.
2. Everything worked. Literally nothing went wrong today.
3. This was my 40th classical show.

I loved today. Please enjoy.

The first 9 mins are totally shot, so definitely fast-forward. I had to sort out some stuff with the limiter and livestream audio but got it going. The playlist is totally worth any opening glitches.

I almost didn't post this but, you know? There's room in the world for non-expert DIY classical music projects. And I'm proud of our little volunteer-run, rebel outpost of a community radio station.

SUNDAY 2/24 10am-ish on makerparkradio.nyc, I'll be playing some experimental classical music and it'll be gloriously imperfect, weird, beautiful and full of hairy heart.

There needs to be more DIY and vulnerable curiosity in classical music and less elitism. The music is an experience and not just a thing at which to level dry academic critique.

Clinical expertise is great and all but why don't ya cry a little with me tomorrow. It'll be awesome.

We'll also be pulling a creative prompt from Eno's Oblique Strategies deck.

Last show of 2018. There were some sound moments, a generous donation to the station, a birthday shout out to Vin, wonky graphics, egregious sleep deprivation, a kiss through the window from Lorie (complete with lip prints on the glass) and the birth of a new tradition. Not a terrible way to end another year of beloved community radio.

Sunday, 12/2- 10am-ish

I think classical music should sound crystalline.

I know how I want it to sound and I'm trying so hard to teach myself how to produce a classical radio show coz I have a great ear but I'm NO sound engineer. Join me in the adventure, as I play my usual consortium of less represented composers - and as I make life harder on myself with the unusual sounds, abundant histrionics, different textures and odd instruments I like. I love it.

If you have an audio or sound engineering background and want to make suggestions or come down and help me, PLEASE do.

Why Can't Streaming Services Get Classical Music Right?

Oh, let me just attest to this in all the ways. I'm thankful to know at least a modicum of what I'm listening for or I would also be lost in a pile of stultifying metadata.

...and poor audio quality is the bane of my existence.

I realize more and more that, for so many reasons, "layperson" and "classical music" just haven't ever really gone together. Classical music enterprises have capital behind them, state of the art equipment, crystalline sound (as they should), deep, almost clinical expertise and not just curiosity, passion and the charming capacity to be moved to incalculable depths by it like I am. There's not usually anything too punk about classical music or anything about it that feels relevant to the proletariat (haha) so to speak. But I sorta feel like there has to be to keep it from risking obsolescence.

Anyway, I like doing what I'm doing, low funds, sketch sound, utter lack of dry expertise, metadata debacles and all.

The big sites miss the mark, and yet the specialist services serve a small audience. What's a classical-curious listener supposed to do?
