Students Find Counseling Resources at Georgia Southern
By: Laila Espinosa, Sincerely Southern
While Georgia Southern offers free counseling services to students, many remain unsure about how to access them or how to start the process — a gap the Counseling Center is working to close through outreach and education.
Students say they’ve seen pamphlets during freshman orientation or in the student center about the Counseling Center, but many remain unclear on what the center even offers and how to officially make an appointment.
Counseling Center staff explained that students can schedule an appointment by calling or walking into the office. “You’ll see us out in the community where we are sharing information about our services to let students know that we are here,” said a Counseling Center representative.
Some students said she would give a 4 out of 10 in regards to the center putting out consistent ads online to let students know, but is still unsure about where they are even located said by Tyler Phillips a student.
Despite the challenges, the Counseling Center is trying to make its presence more visible on campus. Staff have distributed mental health resources, and created booking appointments completely non-online.
As the semester continues, both students and staff agree that more conversations about mental health could help reduce stigma and ensure every student knows how to find the support they need that’s free.
