Scientists have a problem with the word “universe.”

When we look through our most powerful telescopes, we can see billions of galaxies stretching across unimaginable distances.

The James Webb Space Telescope can even see galaxies whose light has been traveling toward Earth for more than 13 billion years.

But there's an important word scientists use:

“Observable.”

The observable universe is the part of the universe whose light or other information has had time to reach us.

And that means our telescopes aren't simply looking at everything that exists.

They're looking at everything we can currently receive information from.

The farther away something is, the longer its light has taken to reach us.

Look at a galaxy 10 billion light-years away, and you're not seeing that galaxy as it is today.

You're seeing it as it was billions of years ago.

Even the oldest light we can observe — the cosmic microwave background — comes from roughly 380,000 years after the Big Bang.

So scientists can map an enormous observable cosmos...

but they cannot simply point a telescope beyond the observable horizon and see what lies there.

And here's where the mystery gets even bigger.

We don't actually know the exact size of the entire universe.

It could be vastly larger than the region we can observe.

Or there may be features of the cosmos we haven't even discovered yet.

NASA also estimates that ordinary matter — everything we can directly see — makes up less than 5% of the universe, with dark matter and dark energy accounting for most of the rest, and scientists still don't fully understand either of them.

So when you look at the deepest images humanity has ever taken...

you're not necessarily looking at the whole universe.

You're looking through a window.

A very, very large window.

But still a window.

And somewhere beyond what light has been able to show us...

there may be far more universe than we'll ever be able to see.

What do you think is beyond the observable universe? 🌌

Scientists were watching the sky when they found something they weren't expecting.

In 2025, astronomers using Australia's ASKAP radio telescope detected a strange object in our own Milky Way.

It was about 15,000 light-years away.

At first, the object didn't seem completely extraordinary.

Then they noticed a pattern.

Every 44 minutes, it would suddenly become much brighter in radio waves.

The burst would last for only a couple of minutes…

and then it would disappear.

44 minutes later?

It happened again.

And again.

Astronomers gave the object a name: ASKAP J1832−0911.

But the biggest surprise came when NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory looked at the same object.

It was doing something similar in X-rays.

The radio emission and X-ray emission were both changing on roughly the same 44-minute cycle.

That was something astronomers had never seen from this class of long-period radio transient before.

And now comes the mystery.

Scientists have considered possibilities including an unusual highly magnetized neutron star or a white dwarf system.

But neither explanation completely settles the puzzle.

The object has behaved in ways that don't fit comfortably into what astronomers already understand.

And that's why this discovery matters.

It isn't evidence of aliens.

It isn't a message from another civilization.

It's something scientists find almost as exciting:

A real object in our galaxy is doing something nature has never clearly shown us before.

Every 44 minutes, it lights up…

then goes quiet.

Then it happens again.

What is actually producing those signals?

Scientists are still trying to figure it out. 📡

In 2019, astronomers did something that once seemed almost impossible.

They photographed a black hole.

For decades, scientists knew black holes existed because of the way they affected everything around them.

Stars moved around invisible massive objects.

Hot gas spiraled into darkness.

Powerful jets erupted from their surroundings.

But actually seeing one?

That was another story.

A black hole doesn't shine like a star.

In fact, its gravity is so extreme that beyond a certain boundary — the event horizon — even light cannot escape.

So scientists had to find another way.

They brought together eight radio telescopes around the world and used them as if they were one enormous Earth-sized telescope.

After years of observations and incredibly complex data processing, they finally revealed something extraordinary.

A dark central shadow surrounded by a glowing ring of superheated gas.

The object was M87* — the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy Messier 87, roughly 55 million light-years away and billions of times more massive than our Sun.

But here's the part that still feels almost impossible.

We didn't actually see what's inside.

We saw the shadow cast by the black hole against the light around it.

We can observe what happens outside the event horizon.

We can measure its effects.

We can watch matter fall toward it.

But once something crosses that point of no return, the information cannot come back to us.

So humanity managed to photograph the edge of a black hole...

while the most mysterious part remains completely hidden.

And that leaves us with a question scientists still can't answer through direct observation:

What actually happens beyond the event horizon?

Would you ever want to know what's on the other side? 🕳️

At first glance, Europa looks like one of the most frozen and lifeless places in our Solar System.

But when scientists started studying it closely, they noticed something strange.

NASA's Galileo spacecraft made repeated close flybys of Europa in the 1990s.

One of its most important measurements wasn't something scientists could simply see in a photograph.

Galileo detected a disturbance in Jupiter's magnetic field around Europa.

Scientists realized that something beneath the moon's surface could be generating an induced magnetic field.

The most likely explanation?

A deep layer of electrically conductive liquid — probably a salty ocean beneath the ice.

But then Europa became even more interesting.

In 2012, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope detected ultraviolet signatures of water v***r above Europa's surface.

Scientists concluded that the simplest explanation was that water was escaping from the moon — possibly through plumes erupting from beneath the icy crust.

And Hubble later found possible plume-like features appearing in the same region on different occasions, adding another piece of evidence that something unusual may be happening there.

Think about what that means.

We can't see Europa's suspected ocean directly.

It's buried beneath an enormous shell of ice.

But scientists can detect magnetic evidence of liquid beneath the surface…

and they have detected water v***r above it.

Now Europa is one of the most intriguing places in our Solar System in the search for environments that could potentially support life.

The ocean may be hidden.

But the evidence that something is happening beneath that ice keeps getting harder to ignore.

And someday, NASA's Europa Clipper mission may give us an even closer look.

If there really is an ocean beneath Europa's ice, what do you think scientists might find in it? 🌊🧊

When astronomers first spotted it in James Webb Space Telescope data, something didn't look right.

The object was incredibly distant.

So distant that its light had been traveling toward Earth for more than **13 billion years**.

At first, scientists weren't even sure what they were looking at.

The galaxy was **surprisingly bright** for something from the very early universe.

So they looked again.

Then Webb's instruments confirmed something extraordinary.

The galaxy, known as **JADES-GS-z14-0**, existed less than **300 million years after the Big Bang**.

That's when the real mystery began.

Scientists expected the earliest galaxies to be small, faint and still in the process of building themselves.

But this one was already more than **1,600 light-years across** and contained hundreds of millions of times the mass of our Sun.

And there was another surprise.

Astronomers detected evidence of **oxygen** in the galaxy.

That matters because oxygen is produced by stars — meaning multiple generations of massive stars may already have lived and died before Webb saw this galaxy.

Think about that.

The universe was only a few hundred million years old…

yet somehow, stars had already formed, lived, died, and enriched this distant galaxy with heavier elements.

Scientists are still working out **how a galaxy could become this bright, large and chemically developed so early in cosmic history.**

So the headline isn't really that this galaxy “shouldn't exist.”

It's that **the early universe may have been capable of building galaxies much faster than we once thought.**

And Webb keeps finding more surprises.

**If galaxies could grow this quickly in the universe's infancy… what else might we have wrong about the beginning of the cosmos?** 🔭
