I tried really, really hard to believe that retail's good times could keep on rolling through Christmas. But after seeing results from the five-day Thanksgiving Weekend, it appears consumers have reached their limit. NRF's holiday 8.5%-to-10.5% growth prediction this year, after rising 8.2% last, now looks out of reach.

Consumers didn't shop as much or spend as much as expected over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend, putting NRF's 8.5% to 10.5% holiday growth projection in question.

One factoid stunned me in the research: Floor & Decor has only one-third the number of stores of LL Flooring (formerly Lumber Liquidators and its primary national competitor) but more than three-times the merchandise sales.

Retailers Must Make The Most Of Holiday 2021 Because The Good Times Might Not Last Into 2022

I must admit I approached the extremely strong retail forecasts for holiday 2021 with skepticism. But after talking with a range of experts, I am more hopeful. That said, the issues plaguing retail -- supply chain, employment, inflation -- aren't going away any time soon, so 2022 prospects remain a big question.

NRF predicts retail will grow between 8.5% to 10.5% this holiday season. Strong consumer demand tailwinds will at least for now be stronger than supply-chain, employment and inflation headwinds. But those headwinds will gain velocity in 2022.
