I encourage you to read the following. A special thanks goes out to the Trapp Family and all the other South Texas families that have put time and effort into this show. Just follow the timeline and see how in a few short years they have grown this mini Hereford show from nothing to the what it is today. This wasn't done by an Association, this was done by individuals who were determined to make this a success. This wasn't funded by an Association. This was funded by local individuals who were determined to make this a success. Thanks to Trapp & Rabe Families and all the other families that exhibited mini Herefords at RGVLS.

History of the Miniature Hereford Junior & Open Shows at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show & Rodeo

We are proud to share the history and remarkable growth of the Miniature Hereford breed here at RGVLS.

In March of 2016, a Miniature Hereford was exhibited for the very first time at this prestigious event. From 2016 to 2019, due to limited entries, Miniature Herefords competed alongside larger breeds in the All Other Breeds (AOB) division. Despite the small numbers, a dedicated group of Miniature Hereford enthusiasts remained steadfast in their goal: to establish a standalone Miniature Hereford Junior & Open Show.

Their perseverance paid off. The 2020 RGVLS marked a historic milestone — the first-ever Miniature Hereford Junior Show, with 11 head entered.

In 2021, participation surged, with 20 head in the Junior Show and 37 in the Open Show. The momentum continued in 2022, with entries rising to 25 in the Junior Show and 28 in the Open Show.

The 2023 show was another groundbreaking year, welcoming 60 Miniature Herefords to the barn. For the first time, Pre-Junior exhibitors had the opportunity to enter the ring, and new show categories, including Get of Sire and Produce of Dam, were introduced.

The 2024 RGVLS saw continued growth, with 25 head in the Junior Show and an impressive 67 head in the Open Show. That year also introduced the Embryo Produce of Dam and Cow/Calf Pair classes, further showcasing the breed’s versatility and quality.

This year, we are thrilled to announce that there are 28 head entered in the Junior Show and 76 in the Open Show. From a single entry in 2016 to now hosting 76 head and counting, the Miniature Hereford breed has flourished at RGVLS.

The future is bright for the Miniature Hereford exhibitors and breeders of the Rio Grande Valley. This incredible journey would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the RGVLS Board of Directors, and we extend our heartfelt thanks for allowing this breed to continue growing and evolving.

When you bring 10 head to a show there isn’t much down time. Luckily for us we were able to catch up with American Hereford Association member Stephanie Stevens of Hat City Cattle Company. We may have to do a follow up . This interview was done before Hat City Cattle had 4 Bulls in the Grand Drive, won Reserve Grand Champion Bull and Reserve Champion Pair of Bulls! Congrats guys!
