Good news out of Gwinnett County Library System and City of Lawrenceville: the transformation of the Hooper‑Renwick School — once the only public school for Black students in the county during segregation — into a combined themed library and museum has been awarded “Redevelopment Project of the Year” by the Metro Atlanta Redevelopment Summit.

This isn’t just another building-flip. It’s a statement. The project preserves the original brickwork, the classroom layout, the story of a community’s struggle and uplift — and then adds modern spaces for exhibits, reading, tech access and public engagement.

Why this matters:
It honors a legacy — the educators and students who made the school a cornerstone of the Black community in Gwinnett.

It converts that legacy into a civic asset — library + museum space that serves the present and future.

It sets a blueprint for how redevelopment should work: preservation + innovation + community benefit.
