Most martial artists believe that if they keep showing up, keep training, and keep collecting techniques, progress is inevitable.

But is it?

During my recent training trip to Japan, I noticed something that kept appearing in class after class with the Japanese Shihan. They weren't focused on teaching more techniques. They were focused on the fundamentals hidden inside the fundamentals — the small details, principles, and conditions that make techniques work consistently under pressure.

Many students confuse being able to perform a technique with actually understanding it.

They know the answer.

But they haven't yet become the answer.

In this episode of KUDEN! Radio, we'll explore:

Why some students continue progressing while others seem to repeat the same year of training over and over

The difference between training and learning

What Nagato Sensei and Noguchi Sensei refer to as "kihon" and "kihon no kihon"

Why performing a technique is not the same as developing capability

How subtle details such as distance, positioning, timing, and balance disruption eliminate your opponent's options before the technique even begins

The role of Jishu Kenkyu (self-study and personal investigation) in long-term mastery

Why the lesson is rarely the technique itself

Along the way, we'll discuss Omote Gyaku, Oni Kudaki, the yearly themes of the Bujinkan, Hatsumi Sensei's famous quote, "If it works, it's Ninjutsu," and how our understanding of these lessons evolves as we progress through the art.

Because eventually the question changes from:

"What technique should I learn next?"

to:

"What haven't I yet discovered inside the techniques I already know?"
