Sunny, warm weather typically sends Oregonians out in droves to their favorite outdoor recreational destinations. However, the continued message from state leaders, health care workers, and those on the front lines responding to the COVID-19 outbreak is: please continue to stay home to save lives … even when it’s sunny.

Under an abundance of caution following Gov. Kate Brown’s announcement of a statewide mandate to ban and/or cancel large gatherings to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, the Sunriver Owners Association Board of Directors has elected a temporary closure of the Sunriver Homeowners Aquatic & Recreation Center (SHARC) starting Friday, March 13 through Monday, March 16.

“The Sunriver community does not have immunity from the COVID-19 coronavirus. With the rapid progression we are seeing in Oregon and the rest of the world, the threat presented requires that we do what we can to prevent, to the extent possible, the spread of this virus,” said Keith Mobley, president of SROA Board of Directors. “Facilities where large numbers of people gather deserve attention. SHARC is at the top of the list. For that, and other reasons, I am exercising my authority as president of the Sunriver Owners Association to order the temporary closure of that facility, until such time as the full board of directors may determine to be appropriate.”

The SROA board will convene for a special meeting on Monday at 10 a.m. to decide next steps, when to reopen the facility and the possible need to suspend upcoming scheduled events.

Sharing the following message from Sunriver Fire and Rescue.

In response to COVID-19 (Coronavirus) and preventing any potential transmission of the disease to our fire personnel, the following temporary restrictions for the Fire Department are in place:

Community member ride-alongs with firefighters and tours of our station are temporarily suspended, as well as public use of our training room/meeting space. Please also note when coming to our front door there are additional cautions to prevent spread. If you have symptoms you believe are related to the virus be sure to reach out to your medical provider via phone to discuss what steps you should take for minimizing the effects of the illness and preventing additional exposures.

As always, if you have an emergency situation related to the illness or any other medical or fire need call 911 for emergencies. We are also happy to speak with you regarding concerns or any other non-emergency needs via phone at 541-593-8622. For up-to-date COVID-19 information you may call 2-1-1 or visit the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) website at healthoregon.org/coronavirus. There is also an email notification for updates you may signup for on the OHA website.

Symptoms to watch out for include: cough, cold, fever and respiratory distress.

OHA continues to recommend that all people in Oregon take everyday precautions to prevent the spread of many respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19 and influenza:

Stay home while you are sick.

Never visit a hospital or long-term-care facility if you have a fever or cough illness.

Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the trash.

Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

Clean and disinfect surfaces that are often touched.

Take care of your health overall. Staying current on your vaccinations, including flu vaccine, eating well and exercising all help your body stay resilient.
