We had just brought our baby girl home a few weeks ago. I was more exhausted than I’ve ever been. I was running on empty — no sleep, painful breastfeeding, doing laundry, washing dishes, changing diapers… you name it. My husband? TOTALLY OUT THERE, like he wasn’t even part of this family.
One night, while I was with our daughter, barely keeping my eyes open, I saw him tossing clothes into his backpack. I asked what he was doing, and his answer? Gosh, it broke me.

My son and I haven't really been close in years. He calls maybe once a month, and if I'm lucky, he'll stop by every couple of months. His dad has been gone for a long time now, and I know if he were still around, he'd never let this kind of distance happen.

So when my son asked to throw a birthday party at my house, I said yes — I mean, he's still my son. I stayed overnight at my neighbor's to give them space. When I came home the next morning, I was speechless.

My house looked like it had been through a war. Broken windows, doors hanging off the hinges, a caved-in ceiling, shattered dishes, a burned wooden cabinet — everything was trashed.

And he left a note: "You might need to tidy up a little."

I called and got an interview surprisingly fast. When I arrived, two young people—her grandkids—greeted me at the door. Then I met Mrs. Blackwood—frail, bedridden… but with perfect nails and hair. She hired me on the spot.

Day one: I realized the grandkids barely spoke to her. They lived with her yet acted like she didn't exist—like they were just… waiting for her to die.

This year, my SIL Isla invited us to her Halloween celebration at her husband's sprawling estate. My husband, Dan, and I were thrilled. Our boys love superheroes, especially Superman, so we decided to go as a "Superman family.”

When we arrived at the party, Isla met us with a raised eyebrow. To our surprise, she, her husband, and their son were also dressed as the Superman family. "Oh," she said with a tight smile. "TWO SUPERMAN FAMILIES WON'T WORK HERE. You'll need to either go home and change, borrow our spare clothes, or… HEAD OUT."
