Finding our way home through food 🖤
For many immigrant children, growing up in a new country can mean learning how to fit in before we ever learn how to embrace where we came from.
We immigrated to Canada as children, and without much of our community around us, it was easy to feel different. We wanted to fit in. We didn’t want to bring attention to the things that made us stand out. Sometimes, that even meant feeling ashamed of our own culture.
But as we grew older, we started to realize that the things we once tried to hide were actually the things that connected us to home.
For Dixie (Dixie), that connection came through food.
In this episode, we sat down with Dixie, Vancouver’s 2025 Curry Cup winner, private chef, and meal prep business owner, as they cooked their family’s Sri Lankan goat curry, a cherished recipe passed down from his father.
What started as a family recipe became something much bigger: a way to reconnect with his Sri Lankan and Tamil roots and share that culture with a community that didn’t always have a seat at the table.
This is more than just a curry recipe. It’s about identity, belonging, and finding our way back to the parts of ourselves we once felt we had to leave behind. And sometimes, home can be found in a recipe passed down through generations. 🍛
