EXTREMELY WET WEATHER PATTERN WITH SEVERAL ATMOSPHERIC RIVERS will develop across the Southwest through the end of December. Several notable atmospheric rivers will slide down the California coast and make landfall in California, spreading moisture into the Golden State, and areas farther inland across the Desert Southwest. Initially, NorCal and central California are favored from today through the weekend, but SoCal and the Desert Southwest gets in on the action Christmas week - starting Christmas Eve. Over the next 10-14 days, a few to several inches of rain will fall with the Sierra seeing 1-2 feet of liquid water. The highest elevations will see NUMEROUS FEET OF SNOW. Flooding is a concern along with landslides and debris flows - especially near recent, large burn scars. Guidance is continuing to trend up with the rainfall potential

An incredible temperature inversion is unfolding across Central California. This has been occurring for weeks.
The Central Valley is locked under a dense fog layer, keeping conditions cold, damp, and gloomy at the surface. Many valley locations are stuck in the 40s and 50s with little to no sunshine breaking through.
Meanwhile, just 2,000 feet above the valley floor, nearby foothills and mountain slopes are experiencing a completely different world sunny skies and temperatures in the 60s and 70s.
This is a classic (and unusually strong) temperature inversion, where cooler air becomes trapped near the ground while warmer air sits above it. The fog acts like a lid, preventing mixing and allowing the temperature contrast to become extreme over a very short vertical distance.
Same region. Same air mass.
Totally different weather.
Events like this highlight how dramatic California’s winter weather patterns can be and why elevation matters so much this time of year.
