So saddened to see that Taft and a lot of other towns are not having fireworks this year. When I first moved to Taft in 2003, If I remember right, I joined the Chamber of Commerce and was told they had dropped the fireworks show a few years before. Use to be put on by the Recreation District but I guess it just cost too much. So, determined to see Taft bring back the fireworks show, I set out to bring them back on July 4th that year. Everyone told me it would not happen. But hard headed as I was, and a Veteran and a patriotic guy, I went and talked with the city, Don at the Rec. District, the Cermetary District Director and the fire department and asked if they would work with me and the Chamber to put them on. A few said it would not happen, but a few others encouraged me. I went to Bob Hampton who I had known from a few years before and ask for his advice. He encouraged me. Soooo, I went got the permits, set up the site next to the Cemetery and we had fireworks. I hope we can bring them back, or maybe a laser or drone light type of fireworks show next year. Happy 250th to America.
