Cherokee Phoenix The Cherokee Phoenix is a tribal media organization partially funded by the Cherokee Nation. It is the first-ever Native American newspaper.

Today, the newspaper is mailed to more than 136,000 Cherokee households across the country. The Cherokee Phoenix (ᏣᎳᎩ ᏧᎴᎯᏌᏅᎯ, Tsalagi Tsulehisanvhi) was the first newspaper published by Native Americans in the United States and the first published in a Native American language.The Cherokee Phoenix published intermittently after Cherokee removal to Indian Territory. Since the late 20th century, it

was revived and is now published by the Cherokee Nation as a monthly broadsheet in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The newspaper has modernized. It publishes on the Internet and is available on the iPhone, and there is a print version.

Two Cherokee Nation citizens are among the eight inductees for the Oklahoma Hall of Fame class of 2026. It was announced the newest honorees include former Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Ross O. Swimmer and former CN Supreme Court judge and Medal of Honor recipient Dwight Birdwell.

Swimmer, 82, of Tulsa, was elected principal chief in 1975. He transitioned the tribe from a single leader to a democratic system with a tribal council and courts.
