Good morning, folks! Ofc. Dave here... If you're reading this, we need your help!
With the pandemic and the upcoming election, it seems that our scammers are having more time than normal to prey on our elderly and less aware. We have had multiple reports of people being contacted via telephone, email, text, etc covering a wide range of scams. PLEASE - talk to elderly family members, neighbors, anyone who will listen about potential scams and the necessity to be diligent and vigilant when it comes to when is the right time to provide personal information or money to anyone.
Recently we have seen the typical scams regarding money by way of prepaid gift cards or credit card numbers:
*IRS is coming to arrest you for back taxes
*Local police department or FBI has an arrest warrant you need to pay
*Prize winnings need paid for so you can receive a big check
*Distant relative got locked up and needs bail money
*Friend needs money to buy presents for child's birthday
Another scam we've recently seen is an elderly person contacted by someone that claims to be a younger family member (grandchild or great-niece/nephew usually). The person claims to have a cold, which is why they don't sound like they normally should, and they claim to desperately need money for an attorney, to get out of jail, or some other ridiculous reason (problem with foreign police in a foreign country, etc). Usually, the person is asking for prepaid gift card codes, but we had one recently where they wanted the person to get $100 bills from the bank and to call them when they had the money ready for pickup. That's a scary one because this usually happens with people that track back to being out of the country... if someone is sending a courier to pick up the money, that opens up some other concerns...
In hindsight, all of these scams are obviously easy to spot, but when the scammer contacts you out of the blue, it's easy to be caught off guard and become an easy target. Simple and quick internet searches can show people that may be related to you, as well as your (and their) age, address, places of interest/check ins, places of work, etc. The majority of this information is free and so easily found online!
Talk to those that could be a good mark for these types of crimes: tell them to CALL YOU, THE POLICE, ANYONE that may be better informed than they are to help them navigate the possible scam.
THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT WANT PREPAID GIFT CARDS (Visa/MC, Gamestop, Walmart, etc) for any reason.
IF YOU OWE MONEY TO THE IRS, YOU WILL NOT BE CALLED ON THE PHONE TO PROVIDE MONEY.
IF YOU GET A CALL TO BAIL SOMEONE OUT OF JAIL, PAY FOR AN ATTORNEY, ENTER BACK INTO THE UNITED STATES, etc - it's fake.
