Eulogy for LTG(Ret) James H. Johnson, Jr.....
Friends and family, thank you for being here today. I would like to thank Colonel Taylor and the remarkable Paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division who are honoring Dad today. Dad once again is proud to be amongst the greatest Paratroopers in the world.
There is a saying that we should live our life so that the values we use to describe ourselves in our resume are the virtues used to describe our life in a eulogy. This is not an easy goal, as we often fail to attain what we aspire to. But today, we gather to celebrate a life that achieved this aspiration. Dad lived a life anchored in discipline, perseverance, duty, honor, and unwavering commitment to country.
Discipline was the foundation of Dad's life. Discipline was evident in every part of his life, from his remarkable 33-year military career to his post-retirement passion for golf. He was not content with mediocrity; he pursued excellence in everything he undertook. His discipline guaranteed that thousands of Soldiers survived under his leadership in combat and returned home safely.
Dad epitomized the virtues of West Point’s motto, ‘Duty, Honor, Country.’ These were not mere words for him; they were the very core of his being.
Dad was a man of integrity, and his word was his bond, whether on the battlefield or on the golf course. He earned the trust and respect of everyone he encountered, whether it was the President of the U.S. or the receptionist at the doctor’s office.
We all had the privilege of witnessing Dad’s virtues up close. He was a dedicated husband for 62 years, a loving father, and a proud grandfather. These virtues also made him a good neighbor and a great teammate. He lived his life as a testament to these values, and he leaves behind a legacy that challenges each of us to do the same.
As we say our final farewell, let us remember that Dad’s life was not just a list of accomplishments, but a demonstration of what it means to live with purpose, honor, and integrity. Let us honor his memory by striving to make our own resume values our eulogy virtues, just as he did.
Dad, you have left us with a profound legacy. Rest in peace, knowing that your values will continue to guide and inspire us in the years to come.
