Oldest vs. Newest Royal Caribbean Ship

Today, I had the chance to see something truly special — the oldest ship of Royal Caribbean docked right beside the newest, the Star of the Seas. The difference is like looking at the cruise industry’s history and future standing next to each other. One carries the charm of the early days of cruising, the other is a floating city with the latest technology, entertainment, and design.

For us seafarers, both have their pros and cons when it comes to working life onboard:

- Working on a big ship (like Star of the Seas)

Endless amenities and venues: from waterparks to theaters to specialty restaurants.

You meet thousands of people from around the world every single week.

Bigger opportunities to learn, grow, and explore different departments.

Pero syempre, mas hectic, longer hours, more demanding guests, and a faster pace of work.

- Working on a smaller/older ship

Life onboard feels more relaxed, less overwhelming.

Mas kilala mo lahat ng crew, it feels like a real family at sea.

Easier to move around the ship, fewer crowds.

But there are fewer facilities, less variety of entertainment, and sometimes limited positions compared to the mega-ships.

At the end of the day, every ship has its own story and vibe. Some seafarers thrive in the energy of the largest ships in the world, while others prefer the calm and closeness of smaller vessels. Either way, both give unforgettable experiences and memories at sea. 🌊💙

Filipino Seafarer Wins Equal-Pay Case in the Netherlands—But Did Not Live to See Justice

Breaking mid-August 2025, the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights delivered a landmark ruling. It found that two Southeast Asian seafarers—one Filipino and one Indonesian—had been unlawfully paid significantly less than their European counterparts for the same work aboard Dutch-flagged vessels.

The Filipino seafarer, employed as a cook between June 2010 and September 2023, was found to be the victim of indirect discrimination. His wages were determined by a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) that applied a “country-of-residence” principle—paying Filipinos according to wage levels in the Philippines—thus disproportionately affecting Southeast Asian workers.

The Indonesian seafarer was subject to direct discrimination, due to a nationality-specific CBA that expressly applied only to Indonesian workers.

The Human Rights Board condemned these practices as discriminatory, acknowledging the historical and systemic nature of wage disparities within maritime labor. While the ruling is non-binding, it marks a significant stride toward challenging centuries-old injustices in the global shipping industry.

✅ How to Apply as a Spa Therapist in a Cruise Ship

1. Check Job Openings
Look at cruise line websites (e.g., Royal Caribbean, Carnival, MSC, Norwegian, Princess).
Many cruise lines outsource spa operations to companies like Steiner / OneSpaWorld – they handle most cruise ship spa recruitment.

2. Submit Your Application
Apply through the official company website or trusted recruitment agencies.
Avoid middlemen or “fixers” who charge high fees.

3. Attend Screening / Interview
Be ready for technical questions about massage therapy, facials, body treatments, customer service, and retail sales (selling spa products is part of the job onboard).

4. Medical Examination & Safety Training
After passing, you’ll need a Seafarer’s Medical Exam (PEME).
Some cruise lines require STCW Basic Safety Training (firefighting, first aid, survival at sea).

5. Visa and Documents
Depending on your deployment port (e.g., U.S. ships usually need a C1/D visa).

📑 Required Documents

Valid passport (at least 2 years validity).

Updated CV/Resume (with spa experience, certifications, and references).

Spa / Massage Therapist Certificates (TESDA NC-II, CIDESCO, ITEC, or equivalent are big advantages).

Seaman’s Book (applied via MARINA, after contract approval).

STCW Training Certificate (mandatory for seafarers).

Medical Certificate (Seafarer’s Medical from accredited clinics).

NBI Clearance / Police Clearance (no criminal record).

💆 Experience Needed

At least 1–2 years spa/therapist experience in hotels, wellness centers, or resorts.

Knowledge of different treatments: Swedish, deep tissue, aromatherapy, facials, body scrubs, reflexology.

Retail or sales experience is a plus (selling spa products onboard is part of performance).

Good English communication skills and customer service attitude.

🌟 Tips to Get Hired

Highlight internationally recognized certificates (CIDESCO, CIBTAC, ITEC).

Emphasize customer service + sales ability (since spa revenue onboard depends on upselling).

Stay physically fit – cruise contracts are long (6–9 months).

Practice confidence in speaking English – interviews often check this.

Research the company’s spa brand (e.g., “Mandara Spa” on Norwegian Cruise Line).

“Even small messages from home make my whole day better.” 💌

Working onboard a cruise ship is not easy. Long hours, different time zones, homesickness, and pressure from work. lahat yan sabay-sabay. Minsan kahit napapa libutan ka ng libo libong passengers at hundreds of crew, you still feel alone. Kasi deep inside, you’re thinking of home.

That’s why kahit simpleng message lang mula sa pamilya o kaibigan, sobrang laking bagay na. Yung “Good morning”, “We miss you”, o kahit simpleng “Ingat ka palagi” those few words can change the whole mood of a seafarer’s day. Para bang may biglang spark ng energy, kahit pagod na pagod ka na.

Hindi kailangan ng mahaba, hindi kailangan ng perfect words. Ang importante, maramdaman ng isang marino na hindi siya nakakalimutan. That someone is waiting, praying, and cheering for him/her across the oceans.

To our families and friends back home: please don’t underestimate the power of your short messages. Para sa inyo, maliit na bagay lang. Pero para sa isang seafarer na malayo sa pamilya, it’s a lifeline. Reminder na may naghihintay at nagmamahal.

And to all seafarers: it’s okay to admit na minsan mahirap, na minsan malungkot. But always remember, kahit gaano kalayo, love finds its way, kahit sa isang simpleng notification. 📱⚓

Crew life is hard, but love and connection make it bearable. Keep the messages coming. 💙
