These rules can be helpful, but keep in mind they are generic and in their simplicity often are not optimal for our specific situation.

For example
- a 30 year old who puts 30% of their investments in bonds and steadily increases that until age 65 leaves A LOT of money on the table vs. someone who holds a well diversified all stock portfolio.
- the 40% of your income mortgage rule is way too generic. Does that 40% include taxes and insurance? How much is the maintenance for that home? Considering total annual cost for owning that home and how much of your monthly pay you want dedicated to your housing costs is a much better approach.
- the 25x investment rule is helpful, but only if you consider - how long do you plan to be retired? What investment mix are you looking at? What are the odds that investment mix will survive your retirement?
