Built by Dassault in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the Mirage IV was designed for one job above all others: carry a nuclear weapon deep into enemy territory at very high speed. This was the age of the Cold War, and France wanted its own independent nuclear deterrent — not one borrowed from Washington, not one dependent on NATO. The Mirage IV became one of the sharpest symbols of that policy.

The F4U was able to carry up to a total of eight rockets, or four under each wing. It was able to carry up to four thousand pounds of explosive ordnance. This helped the Corsair take on a fighter bomber role, giving it a more versatile role as a ground support aircraft as well as a fighter.

It was larger and more advanced than the Ju 52, but it never appeared in the same numbers, so it never became the face of German air transport.
