SAVORING The Season

After a two-month closure due to July’s catastrophic floods, local favorite Sweet Eats Adventure Farm swung open its doors, welcoming families again in September with its Fall Festival.

In July, rising storm waters breached the San Gabriel River banks, carrying away fencing and washing out animal enclosures at the farm and events center, 14400 E.

Vacation rentals find welcome in smaller towns

With home sales still sluggish, some properties are being turned into shortterm rentals in a move that creates both revenue and controversy as East Wilco towns grapple with the emerging trend.

In Hutto and Taylor where the housing shortage is not as critical as in Austin, short-term rental houses are a growing commodity.

KRXT’S NEW OWNERS DOUBLE DOWN ON LOCAL CONTENT

The voice of veteran Texas radio personality and adman Stephen Laukhuf has become a familiar one in Taylor and other communities across East Williamson, Milam and Lee counties this year.

Laukhuf, one of the masterminds behind the reinvention of KRXT 98.5 FM and its recent move from Rockdale to Taylor, was looking for a quiet life away from the spotlight on his Lexington ranch.

CODE NAMES

Some wonder if developers’ secrecy prioritizes industry over residents

Project Strat3, Project Maestro, Project Spear –– while the code names may sound like something from a 1980s-era spy movie, in Taylor and Hutto they signify major investments feeding the city’s tax rolls and revenue streams.

GET GREEN AND GROWING THIS FALL

Eastern Williamson County’s soil runs deep compared to its neighbors in the urbanized core just west of Interstate 35. The Blackland Prairie routinely attracts transplants who yearn to dig deep and grow roots.

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service offers educational programs including pop-ups, student programs and yearlong volunteer training for residents yearning to “branch out.”

AN OPEN LETTER TO TEXAS PUBLIC SERVANTS

Dear government officials, school district folks, City Hall gatekeepers, county representatives, public information officers, law enforcement leaders and anyone else paid by public tax dollars, please be aware Texas residents scored several victories for government transparency during the 89th Legislature.

This is also a reminder that all of you work for the people, not the other way around.

Lastly, if you’re an elected representative — whether a county commissioner, a judge, a district attorney, a sheriff or some other office holder — or an appointed police official, don’t forget you took an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution.

FUNDING THE HALLS OF JUSTICE

While Texas is known for its historic and often charming courthouses and city halls, Hutto and Taylor officials say some of their government buildings are well past their prime and need to be replaced.

Taylor is now considering a proposed $53 million complex that would house major municipal offices all at one site.

Hutto wants a new Police Department building.

All aboard in Taylor: Bound for fun in the sun

At half past 10 each morning, followed by 30 after five in the afternoon, the Texas Eagle blows its horn and slows to a stop in Taylor.

Passengers and neighbors alike are greeted by the distinctive sound, which many would agree is not as harsh as the window-rattling blast of a freight train.
