Five drug kingpins bag 21 years imprisonment over Gabon and Australia-bond co***ne/opioids; forfeit cash and luxury vehicles to Federal Government

Five members of some international organized criminal groups (IOCG) recently arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in connection with the seizure of 68.9 kilograms co***ne and tramadol at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Ikeja Lagos have been sentenced to combined 21 years imprisonment.

A statement released on November 7th, by NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, says the trio of Olasupo Michael Oladimeji; Muaezee Ademola Ogunbiyi; and Sola Adegoke who are leaders of one of the cartels were arrested following the seizure of 17.9 kilograms of co***ne concealed in textile materials and local charms going to Sydney, Australia at the export shed of the MMIA Lagos on 26th August 2025.

โ€˜โ€™In the course of investigation, 20.5 kilograms of Canadian Loud, a strain of cannabis, were recovered from Ogunbiyiโ€™s home in Lekki and a black Range Rover SUV marked RBC 459 EJ found in Adegokeโ€™s residence in Ikeja GRA. They were subsequently arraigned on five counts in charge number FHC/L/925C/2025 before Justice Musa Kakaki of the Federal High Court, Lagos on 30th October 2025. The accused persons later pleaded guilty to the charges against each of them.โ€™โ€™ Babafemi said

He mentioned that while delivering his judgement on October 31st, Justice Kakaki sentenced each of them to five years imprisonment without the option of fine, bringing the total number of years in jail for the three of them to 15 years. The court further ordered that the Range Rover SUV and a Toyota Venza Car seized from the convicts in the course of the investigation be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Babafemi further stated that in the same vein, two kingpins of another syndicate, Obunike Joseph Obichukwu and Uzorchukwu Godspower Chukwurah, were arrested by NDLEA operatives following the seizure of 2.60kg co***ne and 27.90kg tramadol concealed in motor spare parts being taken to Gabon through the Lagos airport on 19th July 2025.

President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday, November 6, assured the United States that his administration is firmly committed to defeating terr0rism across Nigeria.

Speaking in Abuja, President Tinubuโ€™s strong assurance was presented as an apparent response to security concerns raised by President Donald Trump. The Nigerian President emphasized that despite current political challenges, his government will consistently maintain engagement with its international partners.

President Tinubuโ€™s remarks followed the swearing-in of two new Ministers and a positive update on the economy from the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun.

Minister Edun reported that the nationโ€™s economy is witnessing progressive growth, specifically noting that Nigeriaโ€™s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 4.23 percent in the second quarter of 2025.

This figure represents the highest quarterly growth recorded in a decade, outside of the post-COVID recovery period.

Responding to this news, President Tinubu linked the economic successes to the nationโ€™s broader resolve: โ€œThe most important thing is the fact that despite the political headwind and the fear of our people, we will continue to engage with our partners... The success of the 2.3 billion bond oversubscribed is the most at this stage. We are engaging the world diplomatically, and we assure all of you that we will defeat terrorism in the country.โ€

He stressed the immense task ahead, stating the government is resolved to move forward with unity, purpose, and the Renewed Hope Agenda to build a prosperous, inclusive, and resilient Nigeria.
