It's that time of year when we get together with relatives more distant than our immediate (nuclear) family. So let's see if we can come up with songs about aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, grandparents and in-laws. We'll make seating arrangements after 9 a.m. on the Question of the Day.

Over the last decade, Obongjayar's extraordinary voice has graced albums by LIttle Simz, Annahstasia, Pa Salieu, Fred Again, Moses Boyd, and many others, but it's on the Ivors-winning singer and songwriter's solo albums where you can appreciate the full range of his vocal and lyrical gifts. His remarkable voice — which ricochets from a gravelly, volcanic roar (as on the furious "Jellyfish," this clip ) to a sweet falsetto, as on "Prayer" — shines on his 2025 album 'Paradise Now' out on September Recordings (now available in a deluxe edition).

In a new FUV Live session, hosted by Kara Manning and recorded ahead of Obongjayar's acclaimed debut at the 2025 Newport Folk Festival, "OB" talks about his life, politics, the fluidity of the Ibibio language, growing up in Nigeria, and moving to the UK as a teenager to be with his mother (a human rights attorney). As a child, Obongjayar had a vivid dream that that he'd become a singer — and he made that dream come true. Watch/listen to the session at WFUV.org here: https://wfuv.org/content/obongjayar-2025

or listen via the "FUV Live Sessions" podcast at Spotify, Amazon Podcasts, or Apple Podcasts.

Brooklyn's John Brodeur a longtime "NY Slice" fave, has just released his third Bird Streets album, 'The Escape Artist,' which he's said was a four-year journey.

In a new "NY Slice" session at FUV, Brodeur and his Bird Streets bandmates — Jeff Litman (guitar, vocals), Konrad Meissner (drums, vocals) and Tia Vincent (bass and vocals) played a pair of songs from that new album: "Mistaker" and "Run for Our Lives." Brodeur also took the "NY Slice" pop quiz and talked up his love of Michael Penn and Aimee Mann. Check out the videos now at WFUV.org.

Maybe you were lucky to see Bird Streets at City Vineyard earlier this year for the first "NY Slice" live nights, hosted by Alisa Ali. If not, you can catch Brodeur and Bird Streets at City Vineyard on 11/29.
