What are you building that will outlive you?
When I asked Chef Cheryl Smith that question, she didn’t talk about money.
She talked about a place where people felt at home.
Where she could walk through the room, hear people laughing and know that something she built meant something to them.
That is a different definition of legacy.
Not just what you leave behind.
What people remember about how they felt while you were here.
What do you hope people remember about the spaces you created for them?

Who gets to decide what “the right way” is?
Chef Cheryl Smith is an immigrant, and during our conversation she talked about seeing people get an opportunity and then wanting to close the door behind them.
Her perspective opened up a larger conversation between us about culture, diversity and curiosity.
I grew up in Brooklyn surrounded by different cultures. That gave me a foundation for diversity that I didn't fully understand until I began traveling the world.
Instead of being afraid of what I didn't understand, I wanted to learn.
And Cheryl brought the conversation full circle: when you take the time to learn people and their culture, they become interested in learning you too.
“It is a two-way street.”
That part stayed with me.
Do you believe curiosity about one another can change the way we see our differences?

Sometimes you don’t understand the magnitude of your parents’ sacrifices until you’re old enough to understand what they may have given up.
Chef Cheryl Smith talks about being thankful for what her mother built after coming to America. Her mother’s hard work gave her children security and a place to land.
But Cheryl also wonders who her mother might have had time to become outside of taking care of everyone else.
That part of our conversation stayed with me.
How many parents and grandparents were so busy surviving and creating opportunities for the next generation that they never got the time to explore their own gifts?
What did someone sacrifice that gave you choices?

She worked all over Manhattan.

But Brooklyn was home.

Chef Cheryl Smith had a very simple thought:

“So what? I’m gonna make it in Brooklyn.”

And she did.

She envisioned Cheryl’s Global Soul as a neighborhood place where people could gather, eat and feel welcome.

Twenty years later, that decision means something different.

Because she didn’t just open a restaurant in Brooklyn.

She became part of the community.

I love stories like this because sometimes success isn’t about leaving where you are to find something bigger.

Sometimes it’s deciding to build something meaningful right where you are.

What place feels like home enough for you to build something there?

You can build it. That doesn’t necessarily mean they’re coming.
Chef Cheryl Smith has learned that firsthand in the restaurant business.
One of the things she tells people who ask her about opening a restaurant is to choose a location where there’s already activity.
Because great food alone doesn’t create foot traffic.
I loved this part of our conversation because it’s practical. Sometimes the dream is good. The product is good. The talent is there. But you still have to think about where your customer is and how they’re going to find you.
Would you drive two miles out of your way for a restaurant you love?

Loving to cook wasn’t enough.
Chef Cheryl knew she needed to understand the business, so she did something I love.
She talked her way into a kitchen.
She interviewed all over Manhattan, got into Marion’s on Bowery and started as a line cook.
Four or five years later she had gone from sous chef to executive chef and was overseeing their catering business.
And THAT is where part of the “global” thinking behind Cheryl’s Global Soul began.
There’s passion.
Then there’s learning your craft well enough to turn that passion into something.
Sometimes you have to talk your way into the room. Then prove you deserve to stay.
What opportunity did you create for yourself instead of waiting for permission?

Before Cheryl’s Global Soul, there was home.
Chef Cheryl grew up watching her parents create a house people wanted to be in.
Dad handled the music and the bar.
Mom handled the food.
And everybody was invited.
Friends from church. Neighbors. Even the plumber.
That stayed with Cheryl.
Years later, cooking became the way she connected with her own friends, and eventually that same sense of warmth and hospitality became part of what she created for an entire community.
Sometimes what we build later in life started being taught to us long before we knew we were learning it.

When did being kind become so hard?
Chef Cheryl and I started talking about goodwill and something hit me: we’ve made something that costs absolutely nothing feel complicated.
Making somebody feel comfortable.
Making them feel welcome.
Giving somebody a hug.
Just being NICE.
Cheryl said she gets so much joy back from being open and kind.
And I agree.
You get better results with honey than vinegar, so why not just be nice?

She didn’t start with a restaurant.
She started with sandwiches, two baskets and a question:
“What can I make money off of right now?”
Chef Cheryl Smith made the food at home and went door to door through SoHo selling it.
Then she noticed something.
People had short lunch breaks. Eating in SoHo was expensive.
There was a market.
The sandwiches turned into catering. The catering got busy. Her house became a kitchen.
And eventually she started thinking, maybe it’s time for a storefront.
I love stories like this because sometimes the beginning doesn’t look anything like where you’re going.
You just start with what you have.

A matching set will never let you down.

I pulled this one out for the boat and remembered exactly why I bought it.

Easy. Comfortable. Put together. And the color still feels like me.

This closet challenge keeps proving that I have more than enough. Sometimes the clothes don’t need replacing. The idea does.

Tell me: are you a matching-set person?
