Julio Pabon Announces For City Council, 17th District, Bronx
Bronx businessman and community activist Julio Pabon announced that he is running in the February 2016 (tentative) Bronx Special Election for the 17th Council district. The incumbent Councilwoman Maria del Carmen Arroyo announced earlier this month that she’s resigning her South Bronx seat effective December 31.
Pabón, a Democrat who ran against CM Arroyo in 2013, says that he is a different kind of candidate.
"Historically the voices of the community have been shut out many times by its own political leaders." Pabón pledged to empower his community by engaging in participatory budgeting and involving local residents and stakeholders in any and all development plans.
He says he will focus on the needs of small businesses, as well as seek to redress the effects of gentrification by maintaining affordable housing, and obtain criminal justice reform, economic and environmental justice.
In New York City, special elections are held to temporarily fill vacancies in city offices resulting from an elected official’s resignation, removal, death, or permanent incapacitation. Under the City Charter, the special election must be called by Mayor de Blasio for the firat Tuesday at least 45 days after the office has been vacated. Typically,
And that special election must be nonpartisan, ie, candidates may not run under the banner of a major political party such as the Democratic or Republican parties. Candidates will have twelve (12) days of the Mayor's proclamation to submit ballot petitions to the New York City Board of Elections.
Mr. Pabón has indicated that he plans to run under the banner, "The Bronx Is Not 4 Sale." The name is a nod towards and recognition of local concerns regarding gentrification and its displacement of poor and working class people from South Bronx neighborhoods.
This morning, LIVE on OPEN BronxNet Televsion, Ramon Jimenez, Esq. & our op-ed contributor Juan Carlos Polanco debated the #OscarLopezRivera clemency movement.
The debate was interesting but I'm not sure if Mr. Jimenez clearly made the case for clemency other than stating that OLR was a freedom fighter, not a terrorist as Mr. Polanco asserts.
I have included a 30 second teaser segment from the debate this morning. I will post the link to OPEN later todayhis afternoon.
When I posted JC's provocative op-ed taking on the movement to free Oscar Lopez Rivera, I had an idea that it would spark fiery debate. I'm pleased that Daren Jaime, host of OPEN, offered a venue for Ramon and JC to debate the issue beyond the confines of Facebook posts.
NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo Joins $15/Hr Wage Fight
NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo followed up on today's op-ed in the NY Times supporting a $15/hr minimum wage for fast food workers by attending an SEIU 32BJ & HTC union supported #RaiseTheWage rally in Union Square, Manhattan. Bronx Congressman José E. Serrano also attended the rally.
Labor sources confirmed that the rally wasn't planned until late Monday after the Assembly passed legislation raising the state minimum wage (and the arrest of Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos on federal corruption charges).
