What happens when your high school teacher plays Pokémon GO too?

For JeribearTX, that shared interest became another way to connect with his students and eventually led to starting an entire Pokémon GO club at school.

In this episode of As The Pokéball Turns, David Hernandez sits down with JeribearTX, a math, computer science, and video game design teacher whose first Pokémon video game wasn't Red, Blue, or Yellow.

It was Pokémon GO.

Jerry started playing on day one while working at a summer program. Although he'd previously experienced Pokémon through the TCG, Pokémon GO introduced him to the franchise in an entirely different way.

Years later, his students discovered he played too.

When Jerry and several students decided to create a Pokémon GO school club, he wanted everyone to begin on equal footing. So Jerry created a brand-new account and started over alongside them eventually reaching Level 40 within a year.

Now they trade Pokémon during lunch, discuss upcoming events, meet for Community Days, analyze the game, and simply enjoy playing together.

But the biggest reason his students keep playing isn't shinies or PvP.

It's each other.

What if the defenses you built to survive were never meant to disappear?

Ferroseed starts out covered in spikes but it doesn’t really know how to use them. Its aim is poor, its first instinct is escape, and its environment literally shapes how strong those spikes become.

Then it evolves into Ferrothorn.

The spikes don’t go away. They get stronger, but now Ferrothorn knows what to do with them.

That evolution says something surprisingly powerful about boundaries, practice, the environments that shape us, and turning old defenses into useful strengths.

Sometimes growth isn’t becoming less guarded.

Sometimes it’s learning when to stand your ground.

He dresses as Piplup at card shows but the reason why has nothing to do with cosplay. 💙

Piplup is his daughter's favorite Pokémon.

After his grown children moved away, PiplupITW found himself adjusting to an empty house and missing the little things they used to share like the conversations, bike rides, family outings, and Magic the Gathering games with his son.

So he started collecting Piplup cards for his daughter.
Then his wife helped him make a Piplup costume.

Now he walks into card shows and watches kids light up, run over for hugs, and ask for pictures.

In this episode of As The Pokéball Turns, we sit down with PiplupITW and talk about becoming a father at 19, growing up alongside his children, becoming an empty nester, and why spending time with your kids may be one of the greatest gifts you ever give them.

Why would a grown man walk into Pokémon card shows dressed as Piplup?

For PiplupITW, the answer starts with his daughter.

In this episode of As The Pokéball Turns, David Hernandez sits down with the man behind Piplup in the Wild to discover how a handmade Piplup costume became connected to family, an empty nest, anxiety, and bringing joy to other Pokémon fans.

PiplupITW became a father at only 19. He and his wife were, as he describes it, “kids raising kids,” learning about life while raising their daughter and son.

Decades later, both children are grown and have moved away.

That's where Piplup enters the story.

Because Piplup is his daughter's favorite Pokémon, he began collecting Piplup cards for a binder he plans to give her. Then he asked his wife if she could make him a Piplup mask.

She accepted the challenge.

Despite initially being too anxious to wear it to a card show, encouragement from his wife finally got him through the doors. Instead of being laughed at, he found children running up for hugs, adults asking for pictures, and strangers smiling when they saw a wild Piplup walking around.

What started with missing his children has become another way to create the same joy he remembers experiencing as a father.

She went to a Pokémon GO raid expecting to battle Absol. She certainly wasn't expecting to eventually meet her husband.

In this episode of As The Pokéball Turns, David Hernandez sits down with Charlie, an admin of the Richardson Rocket Server, to explore a Pokémon journey that began long before Pokémon GO and eventually became part of her relationships, creativity, and everyday life.

Charlie grew up with Pokémon Red after her mom chased down store deliveries before Christmas to find her a Game Boy and the game. Like many adult Pokémon fans, however, there was a period when loving Pokémon wasn't considered "cool." She kept her cards but stopped talking openly about something she still enjoyed.

Then Pokémon GO arrived.

Charlie started playing on day one, eventually discovering her local Pokémon GO community through raids. Although meeting a large group of strangers initially made her nervous, welcoming Trainers helped her feel comfortable and gave her a community she still plays with today.

Charlie also discusses incorporating her lifelong love of drawing into Pokémon GO Community Day prizes, why creating art can feel therapeutic, and the importance she places on the human element behind artwork.

I was visiting a card shop when this Voltorb ex caught my attention.

The first thing that surprised me was simply seeing Voltorb as an EX. When I thought about Basic Pokémon getting that treatment, Pikachu was really the only one that came to mind. Seeing it attached to Voltorb made the card feel unusual before I even really studied the artwork.

Then I noticed the rocks.

They aren't just sitting in the background. They're flying outward in a way that makes it look like Voltorb exploded straight through the card.

And honestly, what Pokémon could that work better for?

A lot of Pokémon cards depict their subjects attacking. Sometimes that works, and sometimes it feels like an action pose simply because the card needed one.

Voltorb is different. Its entire identity is tied to unpredictability and exploding. The chaos actually belongs there. The artwork isn't simply showing Voltorb doing something exciting. It's capturing what Voltorb feels like.

With so many EX cards out there, this one could easily get lost in the crowd.

But sometimes the Pokémon we overlook are the ones whose artists understood them best.

What if something you added to Pokémon GO made someone's day better and they never knew you were responsible?

For LFKomala, that's one of the most rewarding parts of Niantic Wayfarer.

In this episode of As The Pokéball Turns, David Hernandez sits down with the Australian co-host of the Wayspotters Podcast to explore his Pokémon GO journey, his passion for Wayfarer, and the unseen impact Wayspotters can have on their communities.

Lachlan started Pokémon GO on its first day in Australia. After discovering an entire city filled with Trainers, he became hooked on the exploration and effort behind the game.

But there was one problem, his own area didn't have many Wayspots.

That eventually led Lachlan into Ingress, Wayfarer, and the process of nominating locations. Parks that once had only a few PokéStops gradually became places where entire communities could play.

LFKomala's proudest accomplishment happens much closer to home. It's seeing families play around Wayspots he submitted. It's watching previously overlooked locations become Community Day destinations. It's helping make Pokémon GO more accessible for other Trainers.

Sometimes those players will never know Lachlan helped put that PokéStop there.

And he's perfectly fine with that.
