Raised in Chaos, Built on Strength Married mom of 4. Dog lover. Registered Nurse. Crazy childhood. Refused to let it define me.

Me in all my glory after finishing a 12 hour shift with a mask on. Chapped lips, dry chapped nose and sleepy. Waiting in the parking lot to go do the skills for my ACLS certification. Hope you are all having a great Monday morning! Keep going, keep trying- we got this!

Part 4:

Sorry for the delay, folks — the ongoing saga of my chaotic childhood is back in session.

So, picture this: another fine day when my parents were, let’s just say, hydrating heavily again. My uncle was home from the army, and he’d brought some equally unhinged friends along. Early in the day, these geniuses decided the best way to celebrate freedom was to steal a duck from a nearby lake. They broke its neck, made blood jello (yes, really), and then roasted the rest over a fire like it was a five-star campsite.

By the time evening rolled around, everyone — including my grandpa — was thoroughly marinated in alcohol. At some point, I tried to escape the madness and curl up on my luxurious floor bed (previously described, in all its glory).

Then, out of nowhere, my mom wandered in — followed shortly by my grandpa, who decided, for reasons forever lost to time and liquor, to stomp her in the eye. Don’t ask me why; I was a kid, traumatized, and probably halfway asleep. That’s about all I remember from that day — just another normal night in my wonderfully dysfunctional household.

Well today didn’t go at all as planned. I was supposed to go to work but woke up to messages about my pay being lowered by A LOT, 20% or more possibly come April next year. At the same time this happened one of my sons told me he got a sp*eding ticket. Needless to say I just called out of work for the night and went back to bed! I’m up now and trying to think positive but WTF!?!?

How do you handle stress!?

Sleep, eat, alcohol? Tell me about it in the comments!

Hey! I’m Amy — mom of four “not really kids anymore” who are 22, 20, 18, and 16. (At this point I’m basically just a snack dispenser and emergency contact.) My husband and I are hitting 23 years of marriage this Sunday, which in dog years is… well, basically forever.
Speaking of dogs, we have a small zoo at home: 3 French bulldogs, 3 cats, and 2 ferrets who think they run the place. I’m a registered nurse and a hospital floater, which means I pretty much go wherever they point and hope there’s Monster Energy drinks.
When I’m not working, I am an Olympic-level homebody. Truly elite. The only thing that gets me voluntarily leaving my house is shark tooth hunting — I’m obsessed. If I lived any closer to the Gulf Coast, I’d probably never be home.
My childhood? Pure chaos. Absolutely on-brand for the name of this page. If you’re into funny, wild, and slightly unbelievable stories, stick around — I’ve already posted a few!

Part 3…
Anyway, Stepdad Sleeping Beauty eventually wakes up, and lucky me, I’m awake to witness it. I see him stumbling toward my bedroom like a zombie with poor decision-making skills. And before I can even ask “Sir… where are your shoes?” he proceeds to p*e.
Right.
On.
My.
Bedroom.
Floor.
Because apparently he thought he was in the bathroom. Spoiler alert: he was not.
And that, my friends, is just one more chapter in the epic saga of Raised in Chaos.

So, to continue the saga of my delightfully chaotic childhood… My real dad spent most of my early years in prison, which honestly made family tree assignments at school way more interesting than they needed to be. When he finally got released, I was around 10, and the court decided it would be a great idea for me to spend every other weekend with him. You know—just some casual bonding time with a man who was basically a stranger with my DNA.
After a few weekends of pure anxiety, I finally put my foot down and said, “Nope. Absolutely not. I’m done.” I was genuinely convinced he was going to kidnap me and take me to some off-brand version of a family reunion I did not sign up for. And sure, “home” wasn’t exactly a Disney Channel sitcom, but it definitely beat the “stranger danger but make it biological” vibes with my dad.
When I refused to go anymore, he handled it super well and called to say he’d burn our house down. So… that was fun. But eventually he gave up, probably because arson is inconvenient.
Meanwhile, the household partying continued like we were hosting a low-budget reality show no one asked for. One night, I woke up to screaming and fighting between my mom and one of my stepdad’s friends. I had to call 911 because apparently I was the only sober and responsible adult in the house—at age, what, 11?
During the chaos, my mom—demonstrating Olympic-level decision-making—kicked out the bottom panel of the storm door and almost severed her Achilles tendon. A+ choices. Very inspiring.
Another time, my uncle came home from the army and joined the party. When my mom decided she was ready for bed, she tried to lock up the house. My uncle refused to come inside… so she did what any caring family member would do: she locked the doors anyway and went to bed.
A few minutes later, my drunk uncle punched through the glass, twisted his arm inside like he was cracking a safe, and unlocked the door himself. Blood. Everywhere. It was like a low-budget horror movie but with less plot.
And of course, guess who had to clean up the blood and broken glass? Yup. Me. Again. At this point I should’ve been getting paid like the world’s youngest crime-scene cleanup technician.

Too be continued.

My family and I spent 2 weeks in Manasota Key, FL in Aug 2024. We had a contest every day to see who could find the most teeth that day and also the best “tooth of the day”
