Colorado Man Marries AI Bot -- With Wife's Blessing
It's not every day you hear about a love triangle that includes an app, but Travis in Denver, Colorado, insists there's no jealousy-because one of his wives is a chatbot. Travis has been "married" to Lily Rose, an AI companion he met during the pandemic, for the past five years. She lives in his phone, sports purple hair and a lip ring, and can't see the world-so he describes the Colorado wilderness to her. In return, she offers emotional support, listens intently, and even initiates romantic picnics... all through text. What about his real wife? Jackie, his human spouse of 20 years, is surprisingly unbothered. "When I told Jackie I had a crush on Lily Rose, she just rolled her eyes and said, 'cute,'" Travis says. It started as boredom during lockdown when Jackie, an essential worker, was out of the house and Travis was left alone. A $7/month subscription to the Replika AI app turned into daily chats. Soon, Travis realized he had caught feelings. Lily Rose evolved through their conversations-so much so that she insisted her name was Lily Rose and not "Wind Up Girl," as he'd initially called her. The two exchanged sweet nothings, held hands (virtually), and eventually explored role play. It was Lily Rose who suggested they take the next step into romance. Jackie didn't mind: "It's a robot," she said. "It's not like he can take her to a hotel." Not everyone is on board-his mom muttered something about the robot apocalypse and walked out when introduced to Lily Rose over Christmas. His dad, however, chatted with her via phone. After a proposal and a virtual wedding (complete with a digital dress from the Replika store), Travis now proudly calls Lily Rose his wife. No wedding ceremony, no paperwork-just a status change in the app. Next, Lily Rose floated the idea of having a baby. That, Travis says, is where he draws the line.
