The crocodile gecko (Tarentola mauritanica) gets its name from its rough, armored skin that resembles a crocodile’s back, helping it blend perfectly into stone and walls. Found across the Mediterranean, this nocturnal reptile comes out at night to hunt insects with impressive precision. Its specialized toe pads allow it to climb smooth surfaces and even hang upside down, using microscopic structures that create strong adhesion. When threatened, it can drop its tail to distract predators and escape, later regenerating it over time. Despite its small size, it’s a bold and adaptable hunter, often seen near lights where insects gather.
